Once I was visiting NYS and I suggested to my host that we park at MetLife Station and just take the train, what goes straight to Manhattan.
I was shocked when he told me it was not a park-and-ride. There's basically no P+R for NYC at all.
What kind of Carbrain bullshit is that?!
I can partially do this one for you (and for @lordra.bsky.social): look at the commuting modeshare of children. Schoolbus usage is down in lots of areas, with kids being driven going up. And the family demographics of the shift tend to be correlated with higher work from home ability.
So if parents are using their commuting time to now spend time with their kids, that could explain a good chunk of the replacement and answer why the WFH rush hour benefits specifically aren't as good as you'd think. But more family time could have lots of other benefits we can't measure here.
Another part of the answer probably lies in 2+ adult households, where you could have some displacement if you have one WFH and one commuting partner who now divide up errands differently due to who's already out vs who has more free time during business hours. That's harder to measure.
Speaking for myself, I patronize a lot of local businesses by walking to them when I take a break from working. I'm probably not the focus of this video. 🙃
Personally, I visit a lot more bars/restaurants on weeknights now that WFH leaves me with more time/energy after a work day. These trips are a mix of car/transit/biking/walking.
Just followed you and the first post I get is a firewalled link. Seems a tad uncivil. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure how people should be making a living in the age of free information. (Yet free is often used as the "loss leader" for other money making offerings.)
How for NYC, wfh matches exactly (closeish) with drop in public transportation ridership is unbelievable. I would have bet anything that the drop would be from train/MTA/whatever ridership. People in Brooklyn are now WTF home from their job in Manhattan? But people in CT are still transiting in?
