My son is an adult on the spectrum of autism. He currently benefits from a program that provides training and counseling. These services are offered through the Department of Education. He also receives disability benefits. I fear for his future and the future lives of others within the community.
I wish I could believe that it couldn't happen here but i think it would be a mistake to underestimate the power of hatred. We have to protect one another and fight the good fight
With Musk leading the country and trump behind him, it is not a good time to fly. When the FAA says it is not a good idea to fly, I am going to listen.
Irony is the government cancelling programs that help underserved folks find employment while also mandating a requirement that folks must work to get services like food stamps and health care.... 🙄
His wealth puts him in a position where he doesn't rely on others to facilitate opportunities for him to succeed. He can buy his spot with them just like he bought his current position. Wealthy folks have access to resources that most of us do not have
Actually, I was being sarcastic. Plenty of MAGA's followers say Elon has autism as a way to explain away his odd behavior, like the Nazi salute. Just trying to point out the irony.
Apologies. It's an important distinction, though, that having access to money can buy a spot at the table. Being middle class or poor AND differently-abled, it's double jeopardy
Glad you are safe. They think DEI means black and they think it's fine to fire black people because they do not think black people can be smart. Awful and embarrassing.
"they" are mediocre and/or ultra wealthy and/or ignorant insecure, white, right-wing crybaby men who have deluded themselves into believing they are Christians and if you do not fall into this group and also disagree with their absurd fascist policies, you are DEI. Full stop.
First, as the mom of a son with ASD, thank you and I am sorry for all for us that this happened. Second, whoever doesn’t know that erasing disabled people (figuratively and literally) is an expected step in this playbook, y’all need to revisit your European history.
I'm with you. I'm a mother of two: my youngest is a son with ASD, and my oldest, a daughter, is active duty. To say that I'm both lividand terrified by what'shappening would be a gross understatement
A hearing impaired friend with a finance BA could not find a job. An account was willing to give her a part-time job with earnings below the SSDI threshold. She ultimately got off SSDI by taking a job with the IRS that really didn’t even require her degree. Tragic what’s happening.
or they're ready & willing to go along, ignorant to facts, hostile towards science & experts, blind to the fact that they were used for votes, and think they're 'owning the libs' while actually getting owned by the billionaires they cheer for
That’s exactly how I landed my last job. My employer had a program specifically for hiring neurodivergent people first into an internship program (half the cohort was hired), and then into permanent roles. I was a DEI hire!
Autistic people are often very qualified for advanced jobs but very bad at playing the game required to actually get companies to hire us. DEI programs are what make some of these jobs - which again WE ARE QUALIFIED TO DO - accessible to us.
For example: I apply for a job where my skillset matches the stated requirements. I sit down for the interview and the first question is “Tell me about yourself.” You’ve just asked me an extremely open-ended question with no contextual clues. I don’t know what to do with that.
Or “It looks like it’s been 18 months since your last job. Why is that?” Well mainly it’s because of people like you who see a gap as disqualifying, which then prolongs my gap in employment. It’s a particularly vicious interview question that keeps autistic people unemployed.
My last employer’s DEI program had a cohort of 36 people participate in a hiring event, with a guarantee that at least 19 of us would be hired at the end. There was an understanding that things like gaps or short stints were reflections on employers, not on us.
Remember when the orange one told his relative that their disabled son would be better of dead. Seems it applies to all disabled folks. Well done for the wonderful work you are doing and thank you.
Traditionally the authoritarian stance on "what should a disabled person do for a living" has been "stop." I don't know exactly what trump's administration's stance is, but I suspect they're in life with other authoritarians on this.
Well, he also wanted to deploy nuclear weapons into hurricanes to stop them, so I'd say his opinion isn't worth much. Plus, he has a problem with basically any person who lives with dignity and honor, so you're in good company ❤
I'm a planner and i made note of that too, but I'm thinking maybe the event included lodging and when they canceled it, they canceled the reservations? Idk
Yeah - I work in higher Ed and all the resources for remote work are 404 error page messages. Provost sent a milk toast email about research grants the other day- nothing about remote work at public tier one research institute.
E was not a dei hire, he bought his place. He doesn't need inclusion programs to thrive unlike many of our family members and friends who lack millions in inheritance

They forget about the benefits from many government programs that they themselves receive.
