I have worked professionally as a software engineer for 5+ years. I was a senior software engineer when my last company shut down.
Why the FUCK does this (and many other) regular every day software engineer position require 7+ years of experience?!

Like, just, fuck all the way off kthx
It doesn't say a professional occupation.
So all of your programming experience counts.
This probably ups your experience immensely?
If the hiring manager can’t get sane requirements through, they can’t help you succeed at your new job.
It won’t. You might as well apply.
"Just imagine you're a mediocre white tech bro and submit your application anyway 'cause we both know he would have."
And every position listed in linkedin have 100+ applications in a matter of hours of being published, and then the same position get reposted later, didn't hire from those 100+
80% of that junk is copy pasted by a recruiter from a similar position (similar as in keyword search of title alone) swiped off LinkedIn.
Had similar jobs with similar expectations and management most oftenly has no idea what to write into the applications
(It's because the ads are written by HR, not programmers. Don't let that stop you from applying.)
But we all know that, no matter how many years of experience you have, it's still going to take any new hire a while to get up to speed with your stack and code base.
It's just HR bullshit.
Here’s my trick - apply anyway. And at the top in your summary put that you have that much experience, bc you do!
I’d just apply anyway.
Like my team was people with all well under 5 years industry experience, myself included.
We were excited to be interviewing a dude with 10.
We quickly found out in his 10 years he had done waaay less stuff than any of us had.
He can maintain and incrementally improve the same system for a decade. And probably has a wealth of knowledge about its particular corner cases and domain.
Not our need
