I think people need to turn up the rhetorical temperature on this issue a bit. The administration and its supporters clearly don’t feel much guilt or responsibility. It’s like the 235th thing that’s on their minds.

Most people don't care. Foreign aid is deeply unpopular and most voters couldn't give two shits about yet another problem in Africa. Turning up the rhetoric is a waste of time and energy for something no one cares about.

The thing is even if altruism comes from a selfish place it's still altruism.

While yes people don't find it popular (mainly cuz their own countries are struggling in some way) spreading of disease affects us all and with travel being easy it can quickly become dangerous.

People care about that.

A little? Africa isn't high on the list of travel destinations or American tourism sources so the risk is pretty inconsequential. Plus tuberculosis is literally not even worth worrying about in developed countries so fear doesn't work here. It's a problem for foreigners, our citizens are fine.

That egocentric view is one of the things afforded to you when your country pays for 50% (or more) of all global aid. Seriously, the biggest donors to a lot of international relief efforts is the US government followed by US citizens. The rest of the world can feel free to step up at any point.

Then that's where the work needs to start. Yelling about tuberculosis in Africa doesn't really do that. We need someone to make a strong case for these aid programs and so far there isn't really anything happening on that front.

I'm not talking about myself, I'm talking about the voting public. So far of all of Trump's actions the one voters care least about is cutting foreign aid. Voters don't care about saving foreign lives & Dems haven't made them care. It's a losing issue, focus on things voters care about instead.

The book is terrific. I finished the ALC a few days ago. While reading it, I kept thinking about the USAID cuts & what this means for the global population. I hope many, many people read your book & push back against these barbaric moves.
