😬 might have to get by on the local library until someone can mail you some of your favorites. Think it’s mostly a behavior reliant system, but don’t hold me to that.
Exactly! I know people who already have thought about this just to have housing and the crappy food here in the so called greatest country in the world! We are already there!
And profitable for those who own the prisons. After all, they work putting out massive fires in California for maybe $3 an hour. Noo, America doesn't do slavery anymore... 🙄
We are already there. There is a number of elderly folks that can’t afford housing or healthcare that commit crimes in order to get their three hots and a cot along with healthcare.
I was just thinking about how many homeless people might commit crimes just to get somewhere to live and meals every day, as opposed to living rough. This world gives people with nothing so few options that prison is like socialism for the desperate. A sad indictment on human society as a whole.
I mean, a lot of Asia has issues with social belonging but Japan is unique in that their prisons for the elderly aren't dangerous or harmful. I relate to the article but I don't know if most of the world have prison systems that feel safe. I don't disagree with your opinion though.
From what I have read the problem with japanese prisons is they are TOO safe.
Sit still in silence for 5 hours looking at the wall as part of the standard routine sort of thing.
I've never read that but... with my brain, that's a recipe for disaster. I can't sit still for 20 min, 5 hours is... a hit on my psyche. Maybe the conditions are better for the older populace? Cause if you're going to stare at a wall for 5 hours and it's an escape from loneliness 😶🌫️
Stare at the wall for 5 hours a day vs stare at the wall for 24 hours a day (sans sleep) i guess (also I was maybe being hyperbolic) . Also I imagine many older Japanese folk like this regimentation which is a horror to many foreigners.
They do, and their criminal justice system also treats people like people regardless of the crime, but that's not most of the world. Point, though, is, it becomes a sad thing when you lean towards petty crime to just find human warmth and to feel seen.
I'm Japanese living in Canada and this is news to me. However, I have watched a Japanese TV show where they observe people who are likely to shoplift and eventually catch them in the act. Most of the shoplifters were elderly. Now I know one of their motives could be this.
Oh no I mean a drama or sitcom where an elderly person gets caught shoplifting on purpose so they can be sent to jail and make friends there. To be fair it’s mainly my wife watching while I scroll in my phone but I’ve noticed that storyline at least twice.
And were the most brutal during ww2 they have had to apologize numerous times but other countries especially the ones they came to like Korea and others they still have not forgiven them.
This part is key here: "For some elderly women, resorting to crime is a path to survival. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reports that 20% of people aged over 65 in Japan live in poverty."
ancient practice, xenophobia in Japan.
Sakoku was a historical system in which strict regulations were placed on commerce and foreign relations by the shogunate and certain feudal domains.
suspicion of outsiders is rife there.
Right... Been here 25 years and literally have zero experience of negativity due to my ethnicity, understanding some East Asian background people have face it traditionally
And Southwest Asia? What proxy does Japan have with the middle east area?
This is my new retirement plan. I've watched every episode of 'Lockup' so I already have like 4 pruno recipes. I can make booze using ketchup if I have to (fresh fruit is ideal, though). Gonna start a book club.
Every time weirdo weeaboo tech bros laud Japan as an ideal society on social media, I think of all these stories about Japanese ppl being at the point of the spear of a future defined by alienation & isolation due to over reliance on tech.
It’s sounds more like subsidies and protections for the impoverished, coupled with long term outcome of patriarchal control are the issue here and not loneliness. Weird framing here.
Growth is not the issue, rapid population decline and an aging population is. Japan’s population has declined 14 years in a row already. It’s predicted that both countries populations will be halved by 2100.
The rich like nice things. Basel Switzerland is the home of the most powerful bank in the world that you’ve most likely never heard of: The Bank for International Settlements. It’s the center bank TO central banks. You will never find out who the shareholders are.
Someone should tell elderly Japanese women that there are millions of people trying to learn the language who desperately want someone to practice with. Could be a real win-win.
When I was in Japan the kind of hurdle with that was Grandmas might speak their hometown dialect. We had a situation where the grandma spoke Kagoshima dialect and nobody around could understand her. She had outlived everyone and had to work to survive but didn’t speak the local language.
The hardware store grandma did mostly speak our local dialect but I had trouble understanding her since her accent was ever so slightly different. My friend, my age, spoke Hiroshima dialect and could not understand our local dialect and would scold me because I couldn’t use Kanto all the time.
Think of the linguistic oddities it could introduce though! A whole team of fighting game players in Brazil fluently speaking a dialect of Japanese exclusively shared with a single Hokkaido grandma.
WTF. Are there a lot of single women over 50? Hell, I’m done with the crappy dating apps here. I’ll try Japan if it means I can meet single women over 50. You think I’m joking. lol
Never fails, anytime I have ever been arrested I'm waiting behind a domestic violence victim that's about to get locked up forever. I was arrested for disarming a mass shooter.
yes and this is despite the shooter being convicted in court primarily due to his own video recorded confession during the civil trial where my family got a restraining order on him
yes, I was arrested for disarming a gunner who had already ran my family's car off the road and pointed a gun at the driver, who was my pregnant wife, and her other passengers, my 2 and 4 year old daughters. My wife was too scared to drive so I ran out of the car and jumped on the gun.
I've literally only heard incels complaining about a male loneliness epidemic. Everyone else just says shits rough and nobody has time or resources to attempt forming relationships.
My retirement plan is continuing to slowly kill myself everyday, as I have done for almost 3 decades.
Spending each day violently masturbating to Misty from pokemon, and licking her face in my LCD as I do so. Dying from a perversion of hedonism and believing I am married to a fictional character 💙💙

To be fair elderly women love crime. About the time the arthritis gets too bad to knit, in my community at least, grams go wild! If the time for the crime is more than mine that’s fine.
Back in the fifties there was a Red Skeleton skit about Freddie the freeloader throwing a brick through a window so he would get arrested so he would have a warm place to sleep and food and I wonder how long it's going to be before we all find ourselves wanting to throw a brick through a window?
Have a friend working County Mental health. Says she is always relieved when her clients get arrested because then she knows they’ll get their meds, a meal, and warm place to sleep
Hey everyone, this topic about Japan’s elderly is wild but also kinda sad. I made a quick poll so we can see what everyone thinks about this situation. Vote and let’s figure this out together!
Humans don't actually run the world, not even men, but this is one of those things that if I have to just go straight to the point without the background reading it sounds crazy. Organizations (govt, corps, religions) run the world, and have for some time now. Human input is indirect and limited.
Fun question! Organizations are socially constructed by people. It does seem very easy to confuse "people" in the collective act of social construction with "human beings" as individuals, but it doesn't quite reduce like that. "The whole being greater than the sum of its parts" but not "greater"
Human beings as individuals are able to organize with other human beings to push social constructions in the direction they would like to see them go. If the other men weren’t on board with that, you’ve got a different issue than not being allowed to care.
They're catching up to us!
The poor and homeless population has been doing this for years in the US.
Whenever winter comes or they are sick, just commit a petty crime so you can get a warm bed, food, and healthcare.
My backup retirement plan. Society is glad to overlook the plight of the elderly but we at least consider the treatment of inmates. Outside starve, inside three meals a day.

A corporation literally holding your life in its hands is nothing but cruel and unusual.
Gonna get a letter on your door telling you to be quiet signed by the entire floor
Talk a bit too loud on the phone outside?
Police are here and wanna know what you are up too
In the US, the elderly likely just go to gen pop in any penitentiary. Danger, Will Robinson.

This is very sad.
