Definitely feeds into lifting mentality - when I was a trainer, I would have clients do an impossible lift, ie, “don’t worry about your form, you’re never going to get it to move, just nail your approach”. That way, the sickening feeling of not getting the machine to budge an inch goes away. 1/2

2/2 …because the machine is loaded for the full stack, and for 99% of people, failing at that is psychologically acceptable. That fail is somehow liberating and improves the real sets/reps. I can’t fully explain why except fear of looking dumb or weak.

It is soooo hard. Something I practice with my son is to “have a silly go” the first time and just… not even try to succeed. Do badly on purpose for a while until you get the hang of it.

The other kind of trap seems to be embracing a lack of ability for affected or dishonest reasons, fetishizing or relishing being bad at something with the excuse that this is liberating or superior.
