It continues to amaze me that all these tech bros who clearly grew up reading sci-fi decided missed the whole point of every story and instead grew up wanting to make the bad parts of each story!

I’m his age and I grew up reading sci fi and feck me if he didn’t miss all the important lessons from everyone he claims to be influenced by. Iain (M) Banks in particular would be livid.
I get SO frustrated every time I make a generally recognizable Culture reference (usually involving Ship names) and someone goes "Isn't that the SpaceX thing?"
you can't convince me he has every actually read a book, or engaged with any of the nerd media he talks about. He just desperately wants nerd cred (which is even sadder sounding when you actually say it)
I can almost guarantee they did not actually read those books, or any non-assigned-reading books, ever let alone as kids. They just like to pull random quotes they found by Google search in order to lend "legitimacy" to to them being in the industry at all.
I think that's it. I think she just copied clichés from older children's adventures, including their conservative attitudes. The progressive stuff people saw in Harry Potter was projection. Harry never opposes unfairness in society and finds Hermione's caring annoying.
Reading it as an adult and realizing all of the conservative racist transphobic dog whistles she's inserted in there is painful.
Someone pointed out recently that the normie secondary school Harry was supposed to go to that was depicted as "filled with degenerates" was named "Stonewall". Subtle.
Holy fucking shit... no way that's a coincidence. Just like JK's pseudonym when writing her detective stories being named after the doctor behid gay convertion therapy, Robert Galbraith.
NGL, I'm SO glad I never liked Potter in the first place.
Oh yeah. The whole Neville’s boggart scene, where the most “ridikkulus” thing he can come up with is a man (Snape) in women’s clothing…
The TERF shit was always there. And a crap ton of racism.
Even before the catastrophic fall of JK's reputation, people were mocking and criticising how stupid that mangled name was. She couldn't do a TINY bit of research to check how different cultures' names work?!
It would be great if we could just ignore her and forget her forever, but as long as she is engaged in terf-based warfare, she will continue to be in the discussion, if only as a cautionary tale
Rowling Syndrome should be the name for a condition where an author that creates work that is universally understood to mean one thing but the author actually meant the complete opposite. “Voldemort is good and necessary you morons, didn’t you read what I wrote??”
I think almost none of these bros did the actual reading. They had some of the ideas explained to them by a friend or YouTuber, misunderstood, and then latched on. Then they pretend to have read it.
he would reject the word "fascist" - as many fascists do - but he definitely espouses those views on military, democracy, and moral integrity
SiaSL might be the least fascist that i've read, but that's b/c it's so blindingly Pollyannaish about libertarianism that it won't consider it's corruption
They are the kings of missing the point, that’s for sure. Like older MAGAheads who think the original series was best because “Kirk got all those babes” and missed all the liberal social justice elements and hints that Federation society was basically socialist.

Their faces when I remind them of that time Riker had a shine for the androgynous surrogate alien.

I mean Rita Skeeter is quite literally described as being "manish".
And don't get me started on the explosion obsessed Irish kid and Cho Chang (seriously?)
"Cho Chang."

or, you know, not at all.
I've also liked "Jowling."
I'm not going to defend him but I do encourage careful reading.
