Sadly, at GLCA, out of the 12 people fired, 7 were in the natural and cultural resources division. One was the park engineer, an exceedingly difficult position to fill there.

There’s a book called A Libertarian Walks Into A Bear. It’s about this group, The Free State Project, who got a bunch of people to move to Grafton NH. State motto “Live Free or Die” was an attraction. It’s an incredible story that continues today.

After my Dad left the CCCs, he wanted to become a ranger. Economic circumstances forced him to take a different path - but knowing him, knowing that he was a truly gentle man, knowing that he had nonetheless been a sniper in WWII, I can absolutely see how caring folk can turn grizzly when needed.
