Because the US gov't has spent 30 years telling us how horrible China is, but....their groceries are cheap, high quality, and plentiful (they're eating lobster and crab on a Monday at lunch, not an anniversary dinner). Their jobs provide incredible, varied, healthy lunches and an hour to eat them..

My grad advisor was from China and he was a kid during the Cultural Revolution. He was...a complicated person but you can't really hear stories about it and think

There is an entire cottage industry of Chinese shippers who stock nonperishable groceries like baby formula and fish oil to send to family and friends in China because fake (and even toxic) food is a thing there. My wife is Chinese and would put together such care packages regularly

Their groceries are notoriously bad and they get hour meal breaks because they often work 9am-9pm. I can't imagine why a travel agent for luxury and corporate travelers might have a skewed view of what China is like...

It shouldn't, I know, but it still shocks me how susceptible even smart and educated people can be to propaganda that confirms priors.

No number of stories about starvation, early deaths, repression, genocide, executions, racism, misogyny, or political persecution seems to overcome it.
