Yes -- had to do that for the first time this week. A small lecture (~20 people) and 3 people just having a full conversation. Weird.

I also watch a lot of live music and have seen it in the crowd as well. Like quieter music and people down the front just having a full volume conversation.

having spoken to colleagues at different institutions it definitely seems to be ‘a thing’

I’ve heard from colleagues that people are answering phones in seminars / lectures which I find absolutely astonishing
