Reminds me of my old cat Harold, aka the best cat ever. He was a lover and a purrer, but so quiet, you had to feel his throat to be sure he was purring.
I don't know why some people are being weird about this ginger. I cook all of our meals from scratch and since I make a lot of Asian food I use a lot of ginger. And I drink ginger tea. Also, ginger lasts a long time - I don't know what you're picturing but it's not like it spoils in a few days.
ok I'm bad using up a ginger that could fit in my palm, but I would still be tempted to buy that ginger if I saw it simply because of how beautiful and large it is
as someone who always had ginger spoil in the fridge - if you chop it into usage-size chunks and freeze it, it works great. somehow freezing it makes it easy to grate extra finely, and if you're lucky, the skin comes right off when it defrosts even a little bit
No, it's not that, they just don't seem to believe that anyone ever buys this much ginger. Several people have asked politely which is totally fine and nice but others are being weirdly confrontational about it.
They need to talk to the pickers for our grocery store’s online shopping. We’ll put a note in to give us a thumb-sized piece and we’ll get a whole hand. 😂
I have no doubt there are some weird people who react negatively to all sorts of things. Don't take it to heart.
With my post I was referring to your comment that ginger is not poisonous to cats. People who think that may have mistaken it for wild ginger.
I cook with it a lot making Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and southeast Asian food (@whatdoveganseat.bsky.social) but I also drink 4-5 cups of ginger tea every day.
If you don’t mind cleaning a food processor, give it a rough chop (skin on is fine) and the food processor quickly minces it. I’ll do this with the full root and freeze it.
I buy probably the same amount at a time and freeze it. You can then microplane what you need from frozen and you don’t need to peel. Stops it going bad too.
Even though I use it almost every day, I chop it into sections and freeze it. Because I too find fresh ginger annoying.😀
Then I just take out a section, and while still frozen I peel and grate it on a micro plane grater.
If you haven't had it, shredded and fried ginger is crazy good. I run the knob over the small holes of a box grater and toss it in a little corn or potato starch before frying.
I love ginger tea. I first tried it because I had esophagitis and it was suggested on the Johns Hopkins website to help with reflux, but I was hooked immediately and kept drinking it after the inflammation had resolved.
Something i’ve been reading on local Nextdoor posts is that the tiny, gnarly ginger (like the organic from costco) packs more flavor vs the more common large ginger from China. I haven’t done a head to head comparison, but it might be useful if you want more bite!
I enjoy it if an evening - the prepackaged stuff in teabags with lemon and I think rosehips? But right now I’m drinking lemon, honey, and actual chunks of fresh ginger.
If you're looking for (high quality) bagged, Kazi Yetu has a wonderful ginger-mint tea with a nice bite to it. (Actually all their teas are wonderful.)
Does it bite? I can't have real ginger beer or those really good ginger candies because it takes less than a serving to remove all the skin from my tongue 😭

...after digging it out of the market garbage. 🤢
Guy was a 'frugavore' or 'freegan', also known as a 'cheapskate willing to eat literal trash'. He had other horrible personality traits.
One ginger please.
Oh no, that must be at least ten gingers...
the “skin it with a spoon” trick already helped me a lot!
