We used to go from getting our news from parents, teachers and tv networks/newspapers to grownup news sources. It was a natural progression. Today kids are groomed to depend on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc. and they never graduate to reliable sources. They’re trained to believe bad sources.

In the Northshore School District (20k students, Bothell WA) has a curriculum on media literacy taught by the librarians. Our Union, NSEA-WEA, negotiated a requirement that all elementary school students get library class at least weekly.

I tried to do my part as a college professor in my research classes. It’s not just media literacy. It’s more general critical thinking, and taking the time to reflect on biases, assumptions, and the question, Why??? This is the basis of my coaching practice and a newsletter I write.
