I disagree. I think putting pressure on state schools in red states can actually make a difference. Perhaps the new administration will look more kindly if the state asks for the funds to be released on behalf of the universities. It’s a long shot, but a shot nonetheless.

Yes to this. I work for a UC school and am fairly certain anything our Board of Regents sends will be readily ignored. A red state public u though is more likely to be considered. That said, having worked for a red state public u in the past, they tend to cower to state legislature.

I’m POSITIVE they’re doing the same. It takes time and they have to be cautious. Trump has threatened to sue universities for their endowments if they “break the law” regarding “civil rights” so I think they’re all taking these threats very seriously.

20 years at UCSD, and i was fired for a work injury.
And cut my medical insurance and denied liability for my injuries. it's been since July 2022. Workers comp was gutted by Der Gubernator. Read that as i had to pay for surgery myself. UC DGA FUCK about anything but $Money/gifts$ and image.

Don't forget universities are also scrambling with what's happening to Dept of Ed and federal funding (ie student loans). Being in higher ed admin, inc 1 listed, I can tell you school admin are working to diversify funding to stay afloat. Labs are just a 2nd kidney if the whole school goes down.

Where I work, several programs rely heavily, if not entirely, on grant funding that prepares graduates to directly serve underserved populations. We're reeling from shock, moving quickly to mitigate adverse effects to students, and formulating a response, but it's hard to do it all simultaneously.

NIH funding is enormous. Almost all researches in universities have some fundings from NIH. There are very high numbers of projects impacted by this disaster. Also there would be no programs to educate and support PHD students. The negative impacts will be huge that it could be very hard to remedy.
