PubMed has been down for at least 11 hours and we are EXTREMELY concerned. We hope it’s mere incompetence and not an official action. If any of our followers have media events today, please mention it.

Apparently it’s working now for some now. Thank you to those who responded. We are going to leave this post up as many still can’t access it and we remain concerned it will disappear. For good.
Surreal. It's like an apocalypse in slow motion. Who needs zombies when you've got these assholes? Visigoths storming libraries with pitchforks -- sorry, chainsaws -- and torches.
It does not work here even without VPN. And it would presumably be hard to reliably tell whether a client uses a VPN, because anyone can setup a VPN: perhaps it blocks some known VPNs?
I can access other government sites w mine turned on. So it’s NIH specific. Although, I was able to access an NIH profile/bio yesterday and send them an email with no problem, not realizing there was one. (Unrelated to all of this.)
Yes you must be using the 1.1.1.1. Here is the real test that is concerning to me. Go to NIH search bar and type heart. Then go back and try transgender or diversity…
I just checked with Firefox, using Avira VPN set to a location in the US, and searched for "covid" (a search term that often gets suppressed). It seems to be working for now.
If intentional, this administration is actively trying to preclude doctors, biologists and scientists from sharing data and information. People didn’t vote for denying health and science exists. This is grossly irresponsible. Thanks for what you’re doing and keep it up! 🇺🇸
I only disagree with the part of your post where you say people didn't vote for denying health and science. For some MAGA voters, that is exactly why they voted for 🫏👒
Yes very fair point and I thought about RFK Jr already being in Trump orbit during election. But I said it anyway cuz I don’t think that weighed as much as inflation and all the other promises since broken. I doubt any MAGA deny that doctors, medicine, medical devices, viruses and bacteria exist.
Now that said… anyone who believes polio, measles, common cold, influenza, their childhood pediatrician, their current family practitioner, emergency room nurses and techs, and any scientists working in the background on all medical studies supporting them are all fake… is crazy, stupid or both.
Most likely removing any research on the disparities experienced by racial minorities and LGBTQIA+, climate change, global warming, anything in their way or that challenges them.
FWIW, I've been able to use it the whole time, but it doesn't make it any less scary that it's down for so many people. I'm not using a VPN, just my usual wifi or data plan on my phone.
Anything from IIRC before 2022 in pubmed is "safe"-- as in, it's about as safe as the datahoarded CDC data-- but the stuff that's from later on is currently in desperate need of being reliably mirrored.
Enjoy! I'm a retired PH researcher from UK and enjoyed interacting with so many people over the hours I spent flagging up alternative sources! Now I'm going to watch The Oscars, cheering for Timothy Chalamet. 😉
It is gone. I have been trying to type research for two days now it is all gone. I managed to save a copy a hard copy of 2024 report on teen drug use before it disappeared
Have to check if access to publications involving certain issues are altered or changed, such as studies involving transgender research, vaccine research, certain medical pharmaceutical, etc
This is so concerning!!!! It is a tool utilized by many for evidence based decision making and a great source of information. This war by them on science and critical thinking is a travesty.
That would be terrifying. I use Pubmed all the time. I haven’t really tried it out yet, but someone posted this European alternative: https://europepmc.org
I have had this EXACT issue with a functional medicine school’s website and then Costco. I notified both that their sites were unreachable first without a VPN and then suddenly were made available again. Sounds like someone is setting up to intercept traffic.
It’s someone messing with the name servers. It’s affecting various NIH sites. Not everyone is affected. Some affected regions have gotten it back e.g., Australia
See the pinned post on my profile for some temporary alternatives.
I tell you, if they piss off the librarians, it’s game over.
Until things look more transparent, we can always use the original journals external link to pull manuscripts. I'm worried this administration thinks it can alter research posted at pubmed
the reason they're kids is because the adults that worked with musk man before weren't willing to knowingly break the law and/or be immoral to this extent.
let's face it, brain's still maturing until about 24 years or so;and the oldest DOGE worker is only 23, so take from that what you will ;-)
they deserve to thrown in jail by the nearest judge!
but it should mean that musk man should get a longer jail sentence than his underage workers; because he not only knew better, but he had the maturity to think it through right down to the micro consequences & still chose to do it:EVIL
I am appalled at your dismissal of the weight of burden these young ADULTS bear & giving excuses for them! They’re not 5 yrs old. At their age, it is unnatural to lack compassion for someone (& in this case 1000’s) to lose their job, let alone aiding in the demise of our country!
you might have to have this conversation with the Department of Defense AKA military DOGE is destroying the budget for: won't let enlisted soldiers of the same age as most of doge drink cuz they're not old enough -- you have to be 21 for that ;-)
No Bill Kristol fan but from about 20 mins in this is an EXCELLENT discussion of Trump and the DOGElings destruction of the NIH and the country's (formerly) world-leading biomedical research capacity
PubMed still down… that’s going to F with a lot of peoples’ work week.
(I’m supposed to be coming up to speed on a new therapy area—PubMed is always step 1).
PubMed was working for me on and off yesterday, working now. More seriously, I have not been able to get into eRA Commons since Saturday morning, to review grants for a study section that I hope will still take place later this month.
It's currently accessible in the uk. A search for the keyword 'transgender' is also returning results (I'd read somewhere that this was being stripped out of search strings, but I'm not 100% it was Pubmed being discussed).
It is really alarming. Other databases exist, obviously, but there isn't a solid, publicly available, free way of accessing this reasearch if Pubmed/Medline is compromised.

I can access other government sites w it on.
It seems to be a security change - to be able to track users.
Not working in Tor.
Just an FYI from the shadows.

(now I'm gonna go get lost in papers for a few hours)
Side note: Science should be informing/influencing politics and government, not the other way around.

They composed this mess, let them decompose.

Of course, this might be caused by the recent DOGE actions and firings.
Ideally, someone at NIH's CIT would be on pager duty over the weekend...
People testing on WiFi vs cellular and with and without VPN and getting different results suggests this being a DNS issue. And below.
FWIW Federal websites — the .gov tld — use the registrar https://get.gov which is under CISA, and CISA has been gutted.
