Medicine is always a game of risk of harm vs benefit. A mother who needs psychotropic meds may well not survive her pregnancy if she stops them. That's a greater risk than possible autism in the baby. Also, considering that the mom is neurodivergent, seems more like a correlation than anything.

The "rise" in autism is due (at least in part) to a broadening of the diagnostic criteria. It's become almost fashionable to be "on the spectrum." 🙄Elon Musk and Greta Thunberg would not have been autistic 50 years ago.

The irony here is that the same thing happened with ADHD in the 90's -2000's. The ability to diagnose it became better and so of course there were more cases. It had been there present in the population the whole time. Then it became fashionable...and then the bad part happened.

I think they mean that the diagnosis of Asperger's (which was folded into ASD as high functioning in DSM-V and prob same for ICD-11) didn't exist before the 1980s, and was only codified in ICD-10 in 92 and DSM-IV in 94. Dr Wing introduced it and called it Asperger's despite extreme dif from his work
