While the general public is thinking "If science was being destroyed to the extent that society would be fundamentally altered, everyone in science and higher education would be fighting back with every ounce of their being. I don't see that, so it must not be that bad."

A lot of are retiring or on cusp. Others I think are intimidated. Only message we get from upper admin is be patient & wait for things to play out: sitting & waiting for what?!? No one wants to talk about it. I bring up after faculty meeting & get asked: Why? We can't do anything about it. Apathy :/

I hear same from big places with money- they are working on bridge funding to think about numbers and then quietly say "they have confidence" because have been flying back to DC many times- but no communication with faculty and no open discussion- except "if media or pol reach out, don't"

This. I work in an R1 office of research. An R1 who touts their climate science research as a claim to fame. They adopt the same approach, and it is suicidal. I am in their face about their silence whenever the opportunity arises. Meanwhile, the investigators I serve are left twisting in the wind.

Giving ppl the false perception of hope - "as far as DEI and transgender are not mentioned in my grant, I should be OK" - keeps them quiet.

Whoever took on a leadership position, this is their time to shine. Otherwise you are just another administrator.
