We couldn't send a space probe b/c what computer would survive 50 million years? But if one could, who would be around to get a message 100 million years from now?
That's WHY it's both. Since it is that far away, it takes that long for the light to get here. The distance is 50M light years. The light reaching us has been travelling for 50M years.
Just because it would take 50 million light years for light to travel there from earth, doesn’t mean the collision in this picture happened 50 million years ago. They are two completely different things.
The singular reason I work in IT today. You could only download those pictures via FTP.
Space photography is so important.
It’s a shame that so many Americans wouldn’t appreciate the impact of something real happening so far away, or differentiate it from some made-up thing an AI would spit out.
I mean, they’ve got to be merged by now, no? How long does it take to merge!?
