The Pegasus crossing over the A6 at the eastern end is the sole remains of an idea to link the A555 to the Middlewood Way via a widened northern footway. I think it wasn't progressed due to disagreements with the horsey fraternity.

I never really got the full “why” either, but I suppose the bottom line was the Area Committee at the time didn’t approve it. A report I found mostly cited concern from equestrian campaigns though, specifically that they couldn’t use it and cyclists going downhill would spook horses using the road…

The typical SMBC failing here is that, met with “concerns”, they just threw the whole scheme out. Oh I lie, they then proposed a discontinuous dashed lane on the uphill side only. So, propose something crap, then bin the idea. Never could tell me where the money went instead!

I often think of all the thousands of journeys that one sliver of shared pavement would’ve made possible by now… people going to work, families going up to Middlewood Way. It’s actually disgusting it should’ve been there all this time.

Oh actually the minutes here say they basically supported it subject to “subject to further work being undertaken to explore the possibility of horses also using the proposed footway”. So maybe that came back as a “no”, then it wasn’t taken forward?

Here they responded to me that the Area Committee recommended it should not be approved. I’ll try to find the other consultation report mentioning the horse concerns later.
