Absolutely true moment--when I was at Chapel Hill I went to a psychiatrist. First meeting, she asks, "Are you in graduate school? Do you want antidepressants?"
I always thought knitting should be a compulsory course from second year. “Colouring in” is how I feel about crewel embroidery. Thicker wool threads means it goes pretty quickly and absolute perfection isn’t the aim…
Looking good. New to Bluesky. Giving you a follow. Fellow cross stitcher here! Got lots of projects lined up as I am trying to stay away from things that make me sad or cause great anxiety.
This one’s a kit from Michael’s—I’d offer to scan the pattern but I’ve been marking it up as I go along. You can probably find the kit on their site though!
Honestly I think doing fiber arts would have taken a lot of stress off me during my stint in grad school! There's something very soothing about seeing measurable progress on a project 😂
Thank you!! And yes, we love measurable progress. Much as the moderate hyperfixation is causing some time management issues, it’s helping a lot with other stuff 😂
Although introverted, my offspring — who is mid-PhD as well, which is such a tough state to occupy, with one foot studenting and one in teaching the babies and so much uncertainty — created a fiber arts meet-up with folks from other disciplines. So healthy! These are skills for life, not escape!
We find ways to maintain our sanity! I still remember the talking-to I got in my first year orientation about checking in, and how a PhD isn’t worth it if you burn out getting it.
Cross-Stitch is super satisfying! Once you get into the bigger projects, it takes FOREVER, but I think that makes it a bigger accomplishment to complete.
