I've been on this journey lately, as in, I lost my evangelical faith, tried to move on, and realized the evangelical tendencies (for one, fear-based belief defense/aggression) I learned via child/YA indoctrination were deeper engrained in my humanity than I had the capacity or tools to deal with ✊😔

This is a conversation I have had with my sister. Like, I get why as an exmo she thinks of "religion" in a very specific way, but flattening all religions into one specific type of Christianity is neither accurate nor helpful to her cause.

100% true. We could also discuss whether it is defined as Christianity or as some stereotyped idea of what Christianity might be as a culture and as a religion even if they're wrong but that'd be secondary. I think that most atheists usually just go from not believing in a higher energy/persona.

Yes! And the irony is that they're as dogmatic as evangelicals. I'm not a believer personally and find it hilarious they don't understand their absolute certainty that god doesn't exist is as much a leap of faith as believing in god. You could argue they're a religion themselves.

For an ancient religions course I had students write about a ritual or rite from their own experience *or* from a civic ritual (graduation, start of a sporting event, etc) in relation to an ancient one.

My actual point was to show that all human beings, left to our own devices, engage in ritual.
