American pay a lot in taxes, for insurance, & for healthcare, but get comparatively bad returns w/a frustrating set of systems & institutions that only care about funneling money upwards through them to the already ultra-high net worth individuals running them. 5/

I made the comparison with my cousins who live in the states. I pay a lot less, and I have zero chance of getting into debt because of medical bills. I think I get better care also.

A major difference between the health tax I pay, and the insurance they pay, is that if I don’t require medical care in the amount I paid, the difference is used to help those that need more and couldn’t pay, and with for profit insurance, the profits buys the CEO a second yacht.

Not really. Total healthcare for the country is 17%, but 6% is paid by the gov’t. So, we’re spending 11% one way or another. EU/UK taxes easily cover that spread. Plus, they’re much poorer than most people think. The problem with our healthcare is it’s wasteful and regressive.

My point was mostly people don't consider healthcare a tax but effectively it is. If you look at how much gets spent it puts our tax burden much closer to EU/UK wrt income.

My point is it doesn’t. Their taxes are still quite a lot more than our taxes+healthcare and I’m including the employer cost in that. It only converges at the lower end of income because healthcare cost is regressive.

So I struggle to understand what you mean, if it is 11% that puts my 30% to 41%, which is closer to the 50% that in my head I use for EU/UK average. But my point is that healthcare spending IS a tax, but it gets treated separately...

Unfortunately most people pay more attention to rhetoric than to facts.

Education is the key, but nobody even talks about that.
