Art and creation are also only acts of resistance if the art you make is 1. Countercultural 2. Relevant 3. Inspirational and 4. Associated with an ideology/org. Art on its own straight up cannot improve material conditions in a society. It takes collective organization and action to do that.

It’s funny how you have a conversation on a topic and then serendipity strikes. This podcast popped up and Billy Bragg hit on some of the themes here. The punk movement was very explicit in their political choices. Agreed. I think of all the well known creative types who earnestly speak out about their political preferences. I tip my cap. It’s by no means a job requirement. On flipside a great deal of their art isn’t overtly political. Instead, it’s driven by same motives as their so called adversaries, money.

I think ppl need to distinguish between "thing that helps me" and "thing that helps 'the cause'" bc like, if I paint a pic of my cat that's great for me but it doesn't help anyone else unless I take those good feelings I created for myself and use them to do something concretely helpful for others

And at the same time of the crackdown, authoritarians use art to spread propaganda and fear. Hell even the good guys know how to use propaganda to bend people toward their objectives. WW2 is this biggest exemplar of this dynamic.

my friend who works for a large union has a thing adjacent to this. Employers allow you to bitch about work - they do not like to allow you try to form a union for a reason. One is sentiment, emotion, coping, whatever - the other is material and real
