you can say a lot of things about 4chan but in its early days anon culture meant that the kind of brand building scams that happen on social media today were basically impossible

And so it just became a petri dish for what is acceptable beyond any sort of accountability.
And it wasn't all of 4chan. It wasn't even most of it. But it was the most virulent parts whose memes have mainstreamed into real life consequences for everyone
Even being pseudonymous opens you up to so much pressure from public perception and creates vectors for harassment.
