We had a mandatory workshop about this and I went on an impassioned rant about how AI is not inevitable, it does not actually deliver good results, tech ceos are lying, initial research on it is not promising, etc. I got a lot of positive feedback from fellow faculty afterwards. Ppl need to speak up

Thank you. I have been this voice at our college’s library council meetings, also asking how the college’s investment in AI will affect our campus climate change goals. Lots of uncomfortable silences so far but it has to be said.

This AI shit is all marketing and everyone buys into it because we trust people who know long division (my metaphor for Mathy things) above anyone else.
Toddlers know more than AI and we need to remind people of that.

AI is great in delivering fluff text. Most people using it, do so because it frees them from delivering volumes of *mandated* text for check-box tasks.

Yeah, but when students think of "writing papers" or "weekly responses" as "check box tasks" rather than as "practicing and developing a basis of knowledge," so…

Also the adults using the tools can lean on them too heavily & come to accept their outputs without vetting them for accuracy. Not ideal.

Sure. They're statistical pattern-matching bias optimizers. And the answer is that humanities & social sciences use argumentation & rhetoric to communicate, & so learning to do well the work of humanities & social sciences requires Some form of communications which let students practice those skills

I get into this argument all the time at my college. I'm so sick of people telling me I'm naive, and the right approach now is trying to influence the arc of implementation towards "good," whatever that means, particularly in a context of massive environmental harm, labour harm, and IP theft.

But then the reported 86% of students using AI regularly in their studies ..... I just don't know. I really worry an entire generation will lose the ability to write and reason well, which means losing the ability to process information independently. I hope that's overblown concern.
