fundamentally this comes from a difference in philosophy & incentive structure

legacy social has devolved into a cynical philosophy of eyes on screen. every link click is a failure of the algorithm and UX of the app

these apps are designed to keep you scrolling as long as possible.

if you click a link, you leave the app. you're not going to scroll past another ad, you're not going to juice their numbers of "minutes spent in-app per day"

Bluesky's (& atproto's) philosophy on the otherhand is based in open web principles.

we care about interconnected data, user-controlled presence, and interjoined application experiences

It makes sense that social media companies except Bluesky are not showing posts with links because if they did it as other posts, why would you pay for ads to get more clicks on your website? Their entire model works on selling ads for websites.

Twitter is dying. A lot of people have basically vamp attacked it and pulled a large proportion of the real people off the platform. Without a centralized algo to reify the bullshit, everyone wins

cohost had a tiny audience, but the reach was far wider than anyone expected, and i think a big part of that is users weren't subjected to shuffled timelines to raise click through rates

It feels so much like the original revelations around facebook's "pivot to video" lies. We all knew these tech companies have been lying and bluesky feels like undoing their gaslighting. It legitimately makes me want to donate to bsky for the same reasons I donate to wikipedia
