All cases are individualized, of course. There are power structures and cultural contexts unique to each person who harms. Each victim matters in their own right.

But these are just people. The ones who harm are often nice a lot of the time. They seem "normal." They are, in lots of ways.

In this rape culture we are in (a culture that excuses gendered violence when/however it can), we have to each do the work to reconfigure how we imagine an abuser looks / acts. It has to stop being so fucking surprising each time. Devastating, disappointing, tragic, infuriating, yes. Surprising, no.

Also, it's the shock that enablers (and people who harm, of course) are counting on. They don't want you to be able to believe it. Then their complicity is excused bc surely they couldn't have be expected to know or, if they did, accepted it on its face. Because it's simply too surprising, right?
