Heh, I remember my little sis and I having our Dad take us to see this as well as the Double Dragon movie. Later on our father admited he literally hoped he would choke to death on a popcorn cernal during the film so he wouldn't have to watch the rest of the movie.
The goombas from this movie appeared in a recurring nightmare I had when I was a kid where everything was black and white and they chased me through my hometown.
apparently, there was meant to be an ending scene where Nintendo interviews them about what happened on the other side & that's what they based the games on
People hated this movie in it's day, but it was just made in the wrong time. It's a wonderful and weird sci-fi movie if you detach it from the game(s).
i dont even bother "detatching" really, you've got video game & live action movie, 2 *very* different media suited for totally different storytelling conventions, and simultaneously acknowledging the connections¶llels & appreciating the different direction each one takes is part of the appeal

and definitely, by far, my favourite movie adaptation of any video game of all time
(barely loses out to Great Expectations for favourite movie adaptation of literally anything though (and yes i still need to see Romeo and Juliet))
Hoskins was supposedly nursing a broken bone, I believe it was in his ankle.
But other accounts say they drank because they hated being there.
I knew it was some delicate joint fracture.
Still somehow made a great dystopian train wreck of a video game adaptation.
However, I now just see it as some obviously flawed yet interesting experiment, even if it's still a bad movie. 😅
