That epilogue is especially a hammer blown to drive home so much of the film. I really adore it. Great use of a long run time, never felt saggy or bloated. And the score? Oh madone. Beautiful.

It was baffling to read people go, "The first act is just great realism, but then SYMBOLISM gets outta hand," as if (a) what Van Buren does to Laszlo isn't a totally natural outgrowth of their previous relations, and (b) the movie doesn't open with a shot of the Statue of Liberty upside down!

Maybe I felt like it wanted to be a biopic but it never fully went in the biopic direction. The film making style was hyper-realistic but it eschewed actual history. It had period dress but was not an actual period piece.
