People saying $65-75k is low are crazy. Easily twice my current income and for similar jobs in North Carolina.

It really is rough out here.

I’m currently making $18/hr in retail and could fairly easily get promoted to make $20+/hr so it’s really hard to justify going for all these lower paid jobs.

There really needs to be a solution for higher ed and nonprofits to be more competitive wage wise.

That is crazy. I can make that with just a BA in Accounting and being a glorified bookkeeper. An MA should at least get him 60-80k (I have my MA in accounting).

"museum studies" degrees might be kind of a scam. The decent-paying roles are based on subject expertise-- curators (PhD in entomology, anthropology, ornithology, etc), exhibitions (degree in design; often outsourced to a firm), various management roles

And those openings are SO rare. Like "someone had to die to free up this job," and that job that gets freed up might be on the other side of the planet. I applied for a position in Perth, landed one in New South Wales, then got this curator job in Pittsburgh.

If you're, say, an entomologist who is lucky enough to get a collection manager job, you can literally go to the Entomological Collections Network course on managing an insect collection and learn the basics. I personally know many anthropology majors who work in museums — go for it anyways. Anything tangentially related to history can work. Some places actually place more value on non museum studies majors as it diversify their team’s skill sets.
