I have 2 sewing machines - a Bernini 1001 that I got last century, before everything was communized, and which if you could find used I would highly recommend
The other is a Janome Horizon I got for my 50th? birthday that has a number or features I do like (also some years old)

I use a Juki TL-2010Qi and it is a total workhorse - I love it for piecing and quilting (and for bag making!) and it’s endured 5 years of very heavy use with no issues.

Bernina girl here. I have 3 and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. They aren’t cheap but they will last
forever. Find a dealer
near you and try them
out.

low price machines: Singer Heavy Duty is absolute crap, stay away as far as you can, wasting needles by just running fucking fast, love my Brother XQ3700 especially when it is about overcast/overedge 💚

If all you need is a straight stitch, get a Juki DDL 8700. You can upgrade with a needle positioner and some other stuff. I got mine from Cutsew. True, shipping was spendy, but I love the machine.

My favorite machine is one that was probably from the 50s I found at a flea market for $30. I always forget the company name, they were only around for 10-15 years. My other machine is a singer embroidery machine from 2015 that works great. But I paid 900 for it.

I love my Juki TL2000qi. I use a Husqvarna Jade 20 for zigzag and other stitches.

Another Juki fan here. Zoom zoom. But also consider thrifting -- older machines can be workhorses, and cheap, even adding in the cost of a basic tune-up from a repair shop. Newer basic machines can suffer more from planned obsolescence and cheap parts.

My Juki DDL-8700 is a workhorse that will outlive me, it's straight stitch only and not portable, it's set into and comes with a table. For everything else I'm a Bernina gal.

I love my Bernina 475QE plfor piecing and quilting throws. I love my Bernina 735PE for piecing and quilting twin or larger quilts.
475 has a 7" harp and the 735 has a 10" harp.

I love old Kenmore tanks for bag making! I use and love old Singer straight stitch machines etc…
But if I were to buy new and have just one I would look at Juki because they have quite the fan base.
