It was the blanket coverage of George Best’s death - which was, of course, noteworthy in general, but of *particular* fascination to anyone who was a seven year old boy in 1968 - that made me suspect that news agendas might not be chosen entirely dispassionately.

I’ve not bought a newspaper in 16 years. Similarly councillors I know fret about headlines in our local paper, which nobody buys or reads any more and their articles hide behind a paywall. The bbc/Sky/ITV push the myth that papers are important.

In America it's basically "eh, they were really popular for a very short time and also were/are colorful characters; maybe worth a brief mention." In Britain they were an enormous cultural phenomenon for years, so the hype makes some sense.
