I swear (I know it isn't likely but imagine) if someone somehow convinces him to put on a production of the off Broadway show of Cats: The Jellicle Ball, it'd perhaps be one of the greatest theatre related stunts ever pulled in recent times.
To be clear, the Kennedy Center is ALREADY focused on crowd-pleasing shows for the most part. They don’t take a ton of risks. Some of the ballets and other shows are much more experimental and edgier, but the big shows? Stuff like Hamilton and Les Miserables, not exactly obscure works
Why doesn't he just replace that "Shear Madness" thing that's played forever with a recurring series of his favorite Andrew Lloyd Weber and leave everything else alone
Trump really hates paying for what anything is worth. They'll put on shows with desperate casts. And only MAGA tourists and GOP hangers on will attend them. It will be as low rent as the "Sheer Madness" tripe that's been playing there for years in those dank basement spaces Trump moaned about.
There are a ton of (quite decent) non-equity tours and productions across the country. AEA has learned to coexist with them to an extent, but in no universe are they considered on equal par with official AEA Nat'l Tours, B'way, etc. They're gonna have bus & truck tours of CATS at the Kennedy Center.
To be fair, I'd love to see the Kennedy Center put on a production of Cats: The Jellicle Ball, or that controversial, confrontational revival of Oklahoma from a few years back -- the current trend of radically reimagining classic musicals is one these numpties clearly aren't aware of (yet).
I am flashing back to the 🍊🤡 supporting CFO fish-out-of-water at my daughter’s performing arts charter school who thought we should pivot to “les controversial” productions, missing the whole point of the school’s existence. They put on a production of The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told” which…
…was “boycotted” by ultra-religious groups from around the country. The show tells the story of Adam and Steve in the garden of Eden. The resulting publicity made it the school’s highest grossing production! I worked there in the finance office, and my boss (the previous CFO) and I thought…
…we should go for the Trifecta, with Book of Morman and Jesus Christ Superstar! The kids were fantastic. It was scary, in a much less scary time, but folks really rallied.
On the one hand the narrative about Antisemitism is useful to an administration that pretends to oppose antisemitism (while being entirely composed of Nazis).
On the other hand, any characters from Fiddler that survived did so as refugees.
Please God, PLEASE don't let anyone tell him that Love Never Dies was a thing that existed. He'll bring it back faster than RFK is bringing back measles.
I don't know -- Trump Productions' first show at the Kennedy Center will be "Springtime for Hitler,"
with Trump as, you know who? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovCf9VRLnDY
OH shit, just go ahead and make it THE TRUMP CENTER in huge childish golden block letters! You'll be using the place to celebrate YOURSELF and give pats on the head to your lickspittles anyway.
As stupid and laughable as this is, it’s also - like his desire for a military parade in the first term - symptomatically significant of his dictatorial yearnings. “Strong men” leaders from Stalin on have always sought control over the cultural apparatus and ideally its crawling obeisance.
Kennedy Center honoree - Vanilla Ice. It's only a matter of time. "Remember that song, Ice Ice Baby? [does his stupid dance] That was a good one, a very strong song, very powerful..."
I know the Kennedy Center isn’t the most “important” issue right now (as a trans woman, it’s not even the most important issue to me personally!) but it’s just so fuckin’ hard to watch!
And shouldn't being named to the Baseball Hall of Fame also be open to NFL, NBA and NHL retirees, plus politicians and entertainers? It just makes sense, like this...
Don't be shocked, but actually BR was in show biz -- in the off season, Babe Ruth traveled in a vaudeville show telling baseball stories. My great aunt saw him at the Pantages Theater in Portland, according to her diary in 1926. So I guess...
It's about time someone recognized Babe Ruth's achievements! Such an overlooked athlete. Most people only know about the candy bar company he founded. And his more famous sibling, Ruth Baber Ginsberg....
My sister teaches Dance for Parkinson's patients at the KC. She got a last minute EM telling her she couldn't have her usual space (or any other) and that it would be otherwise occupied for the next 4 weeks.

There is no need to know more about Trump's view of culture.

I'm sure it's all above board and he won't be expecting himself to be a recipient.
😶
It's not like he craves recognition or anything, being the..."humble" man he is.
