Here's the weirdest Fugard fact you will ever hear (I'll be curious to see if this makes it into any obits): He played a crazy lighthouse keeper for two weeks on the daytime soap One Life to Live in the 1980s, when the show would routinely help theater folks in NYC pick up a little extra cash.

Crushed by this. Knew him at school, got to know him at the O'Neill (he'd sniff everyone's booze but had stopped drinking by then) and then he asked me to adapt 'My Children My Africa' (it did not go well). A sweet, complicated, hugely loveable, brilliant man. RIP.

Just a wonderful playwright. Even beyond his more dissident/political work, which is excellent, I think The Road to Mecca is one of the most beautiful plays I’ve ever read/seen. I first encountered it when I was a teenager and it really rocked me. There’s so much wisdom in it.
