But also the very nature of a discord server is that’s it’s siloed. The fun part of Facebook was that it is not. That you could post and see posts from people you know from different places and contexts in one spot and that these people might mix it up in your replies.

I think platforms know that they are less likely to make money if you are enabled and encouraged to hole youself up with your friends and share how much fun it can be to genuinely enjoy each other's company.

Best I can think of for that is Discord.

Twitter has groups. It pushes it every now and again but with engagement as low as it is I doubt it works. Maybe Bluesky can do something like that.

I went there earlier, since I couldn't sleep, to check my privacy settings after not being there in awhile. What a mess. A few people saying they were safe from the fires, but mostly SPAM disguised as posts. Practically a ghost town otherwise.

I don't regret leaving, but it needs a replacement.

I still have a lot of fiends active there, it’s just the algorithm would rather show meme accounts, reels, and suggested groups than anything or anyone I choose to see.

Same. I *like* seeing what people I know are up too. I’ve seen people complain that it’s been a right wing hells doe for years, but none of the people I’m friends with there are right wingers so at worst, I’ll see a bad comment from a stranger on a friend’s post.

Yes, same. But it is absolutely garbage on my phone, where I refuse to have the app, and so all I can see is "selling stuff" and never my friends. On my computer, it's more or less okay.

Meh. One of my favourite things about Facebook is that it’s not siloed, the people I know from different cities, different interests, different stages of my like are all there, bumping together in my replies.

I tried to get on discord because my phd cohort has a server but it’s way too ugly.

I like that it’s the place where my former professors will talk to my noise scene friends and both will talk to the people I know from my past career in poster art who will in turn talk to the people I know from the 90’s punk scene in Ottawa who will talk to my contemporary dance colleagues.

That’s been problem with fb, way before the announced changes to moderation. I don’t have right wing family members or childhood friends yelling at me, I see minimal bad behaviour. But the algorithm is so cooked that I see more suggested content than people/pages I follow and links are suppressed.

Totally agree. I have wanted to get off that platform for so long, but out of all that I have tried it offers things that I just cannot get elsewhere and that will really make empty spaces in my life if / when I finally leave.

The social media site that doesn’t allow search? Where small instances defederate the large ones just because? Not exactly conducive for finding ones’s varied IRL connections. I was wondering if having a platform that charged a tiny monthly fee..(0.10 cents a month) but would be free of the influence of advertisers would be any good? Also the only way to get an account would be to be invited by an already active user, could this prevent Bots taking over?

Im not sure about invites because for it to be a place to socialize, there needs to be a critical mass and it needs to be easy to find your people. I have lots if IRL friends joining here and petering out, probably because they aren’t finding their people and the people they find aren’t active.
