I think one of the larger issues is that advertising and to a lesser extent, graphic design can both find use cases that aren't ridiculous. Advertising as a whole tends to steal art for comps anyway.

I'm faculty fir the MFAVN program and saw the seminar on the schedule. I asked a lot of pros what actual utility major genAI engines have for their work that students should be familiarizing themselves with, ie, beyond a few "smart" tools in familiar software. Not a single person had a use case.

I can spot genAI images pretty well, so I'm not concerned about plagiarism, and if a student desperately wanted to usea major genAI engine for conceptual artmaking purposes then I would not be a good advisor match for them anyway. 🗑️

I've been working as dual-staff/faculty and I've set up files for their business cards/postcards/comics such that bleed and crop marks are already assumed, just save the photoshop files and it automatically updates.

Two students with very happy faces last night printing comics, so that was good.

I keep having testy exchanges with people in my department about this, I feel so alienated. So many of my colleagues seem to be using these tools for research and teaching prep uncritically, and they treat me with pity and scorn when I raise objections.

I would say “no,” but I guess it depends on school policies and the course syllabus. I feel like I don’t really have a good sense anymore for how people are using genAI, honestly. My colleagues tell me that we should be teaching students how to use this to be competitive in the future job market 🫠

As someone who *IS* very much in the job market… I would ask your colleagues what skills they believe they are teaching, and how they expect those skills to be applied. I truly do not think enough *legitimate* uses for genAI exist that could be credibly offered in a classroom setting.
