I know what you're saying, I just don't agree that reading can only be done by eyes or fingers when the end result is the same as listening too: Your imagination taking you somewhere.

You can learn new words and expose yourself to new ideas with an audiobook.
Why do we read out loud to children before bed? Because brain work is exhausting!
Miscomprehend something in an audiobook and the faff of going back is often too much bother.
If you are asking about sign language in general then yes, sign language, like body language is read.
I fear even my comprehension of body language is poor, judging by some interactions in pubs.

I think it should be noted there are great downsides to this type of "learning" which is adjacent to audio books.
Audio books do not improve your ability to read, UNLESS you join in.
Like if someone asks, “Have you read [Title]?” and you’ve listened to the audiobook and say yes, I don’t think you’re lying.
But the fact that my sister’s toddler loves having stories read to her doesn’t mean she can read.

I don't experience a difference in brain power with audiobooks, but reading books like I used to is harder on my eyes except for short periods.
