And since Colditz marks story 25, that means I have the first ever Top 10:
1. The Fearmonger
2. The Holy Terror
3. The Marian Conspiracy
4. Bloodtide
5. The Spectre of Lanyon Moor
6. Storm Warning
7. Dust Breeding
8. Project: Twilight
9. The Fires of Vulcan
10. Colditz
Who’s your number one?

1000% yes!!!
Reminds me of when there were no VHS so the fan clubs used to show stories at their events.

“Withering outgrown”‽ 😂😂 Today’s lesson, kids: don’t type with one eye on a Tube map…
I meant “withering putdown”, of course. Unless “outgrown” is what The Kids™️are saying today in which case I totally, totally meant that instead.

Yeah - I’d remembered they were good together… but that did them a disservice. They’re bloody astonishing together.
IRL, I’ve just listened to Project: Twilight and the reason Cassie resonates so well is because of Evelyn who gives the character the shades she needs for pathos. Truly obsessed! 😂😂

Just in case it’s not clear, Red Dawn isn’t one of my favourites, but those 5 stories show what those same ideas can really do.
And if you *do* want to see my review of Red Dawn to find out why I didn’t enjoy it… here’s the review. Grab a strong coffee… you’ll need it!

5️⃣ The Doomsday Contract
Dark corporate greed meets absurd legal satire in a very Douglas Adams-esque courtroom romp.
Morally sharp and brilliantly weird.

4️⃣ Ice Heist
At last! An Ice Warrior story where Martian honour matters… and the stakes don’t get buried under endless exposition. (Oh, and it’s also the first time Tom Baker meets the hissy boys from Mars!)

3️⃣ The Sandman
The Sixth Doctor is the villain… or is he? Honour, propaganda, and intergalactic myth-making collide in a wild genre-bending tale.

2️⃣ The Harvest
A cyber-medical conspiracy unravels in 2020s London.
Smart, atmospheric and packed with tension, just like Red Dawn isn’t.

1️⃣ Embrace the Darkness
The Eighth Doctor investigates a space station where the lights have gone out—and the truth is darker still.
Claustrophobic, philosophical, brilliant.

I listened to this again a few weeks back and it hit me how it’s somehow *more* relevant 20-odd years later than it ever was at the time of release.

I’m looking forward to getting to that one in my re-listen - I really like time travel stories which play with cause/effect of changing the future, and i remember really enjoying SoF for that reason!
(Plus young Sebastian looks a bit like a dark haired Orlando Bloom in my head… 😂😂)

Obviously, that should say “human pests”… but I can’t change it now without having number one at the bottom of my list… and just the thought of that makes me shudder. 😂😂

Monsters returning = good.
Monsters returning with character depth, killer scripts, and new twists = very good.
My full review of The Genocide Machine (starring other returning legends, the Daleks) is live now: hit the link, and subscribe free for more!

5️⃣ The Master – Master
Before Missy, before Simm, Big Finish told a haunting Master story where he’s… reformed?
Spoiler: It gets dark. This one’s unforgettable, taking place just in one house over one dinner party.

4️⃣ The Sontarans — Heroes of Sontar
Sontar-ha! But… make it a comedy. This story plays against type and is *funny* and a whole new take on everyone’s favourite potato-headed warriors.

3️⃣ ??? — Brave New Town
A sleepy seaside village. Time standing still. And a classic monster hiding in plain sight.
No spoilers—but this one’s worth sticking with for the reveal.

2️⃣ The Cybermen — Spare Parts
Not just a return. A reinvention. Spare Parts takes us back to the birth of the Cybermen with quiet horror, ethical dilemmas, and one of the best Cybermen stories ever.

1️⃣ Silirians – Bloodtide
Silirians wanting to get rid of the human oats on their planet… guest starring Charles Darwin…‽
Bloodtide brings back the Silurians back with sinister flair and plenty of philosophical punch.

Yep - I think Dalek Empire (the first series especially) also did a lot to bring the focus back to them as truly evil forces to be reckoned with, rather than needing Davros to provide any real sense of threat.

Same here! Most I spent was on the reprint of Castles of Burgundy… and I had a very similar point of view to you!

I’m not too far ahead - I’m dropping my review of The Genocide Machine on Monday. Likewise, looking forward to seeing your thoughts too! Spoiler: The Marian Conspiracy is even better than you remember it. 😉

Yaaaay - let me know what you think when you give it a listen!
(I’ve just purchased Goth Opera in the same sale 😊😊😊)

Super interesting - agree with lots of the points you make (especially that Warner would have been *amazing* as Krane!!)… sadly, I *did* find it hard to love lizards in Alaska, though…
Also writing reviews to keep me motivated on my relisten - link over on my profile if you fancy comparing notes!

If you’re thinking of skipping ahead, the Mary Shelley ones aren’t a bad call as there’s only three and they pretty much stand alone. Plus, The Silver Turk (the first story) is bloody brilliant and has a deservedly good reputation. 😊😊
