Americans under 25 have no idea how anomalous and deranged it is for the news to report obsessively on the persona and psychology of the executive with respect to matters of policy and governance. This is not even remotely normal.

This is correct, and the proper historical parallel for this is, literally, old fashioned monarchy, in which the country is legally the private property of the king or queen. The people have no title to power in his country. A bunch of 19th century European politics was just a fight to abolish that

On the whole "welcome Elon back to the Democrats" thing, I think people are overlooking how he is perhaps the most toxic high-profile political figure in America. He's permanently burned bridges with people across the spectrum. That's not going to go the way people think it will.

I see people tweeting negatively about "Bullshit Jobs" on here oddly frequently but imo it's a good book. Like, the sense that a) a lot of jobs are more about impression management than about getting something done and b) I don't personally want one of those jobs...that tracks!

psa if you do this the purged federal employees will never forgive you

Honor can't be bought. But it can be sold!

“Poster’s Madness” is now a structural theory of international politics and domestic coalition-maintenance and degradation. Throw out that IR degree.

"This is OK. This is just another moment that'll haunt me forever"

Musk's political downfall having more to do with the stupid squabbles of careless, vain, and cruel men over just how much we should hurt the poor and help the wealthy than with the hundreds of thousands of deaths Musk has on his hands from USAID cuts alone makes this all feel pretty nauseating, imo.

I suppose it hasn’t occurred to “Real Life Tony Stark” that the implication is him having willingly played sidekick to a pedo.

Przeworski: "...the..budget...is nothing short of a revolution...except for Milei, no democratically elected government ever attempted restructuring the relation between the State and society to a similar extent... transformations of this scope cannot be effectuated under democratic conditions."

More than US vs Russia or Democrats vs Republicans it's remarkable how clarifying it is to look at the last 10 years as "liberals vs authoritarians". Non-US authoritarians are happy to support US authoritarians against US liberals

The Republic as we knew it is over. We are living through a culmination of a) an 80-year movement to undo the New Deal's reconstruction of the United States as a modern state, b) a 60-year movement to reverse the Second Reconstruction, and c) a 50-year movement to undo post-Watergate reforms [1]

Tilly and Bates are both pretty clear that a modern democratic government is only possible with citizens depending on strangers for important outcomes. Like, you get your food from your job, not your family, and you trust it's safe because of regulations and profit incentives, not relationships

Full employment, withdrawal from Afghanistan, Executive Order 13988 (rescinded by Trump), federal documentation for trans individuals (also rescinded by Trump), 183.6 billion dollars in student loan forgiveness…

Randy Clarke!!!! open.substack.com/pub/statecra...

the core problem with "just triangulate" is that polling shows Harris won "voters who knew what the fuck was going on", which pretty directly implies that you cannot fix whatever problems we have by changing facts. the problem is people who don't know facts.

Zhukov's not in Grossman's Life and Fate at all iirc. Mildly interesting since he looms pretty large in other accounts of USSR WWII fighting

On this note it's a major failure of liberal discourse to be unable to name certain sectors. "Oh those evil reactionaries in the red states..." Do you mean "ranchers"

they made the guy with the ties to neonazi satanist hacker rapists a fucking GS-15

This is the fucking way

I’m disappointed that my fellow councilmembers voted to 8-4 to delay the tipped wage increase in I-82 from July to October. I joined fellow Councilmembers Frumin, Lewis-George, and Parker in standing with restaurant workers. Workers are angry, and rightly so.

Think the most wrong I've ever been about what to expect from a book is Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Assigned in high school, I saw that name and title and was like, this is about the aftermath of the nukes

Ran into a college friend i hadn't seen in years at the unemployment office. DC 2025!

I will say that one big caveat here is that AOC and Sanders both very enthusiastically *did* support most of Biden's agenda, and I think AOC in particular is benefiting a good deal from being seen as a reliable coalition partner. 1

Biden failed at many things but he made a major break with Clintonite free trade and especially Obama's pint-sized stimulus policy and got basically no credit for it. Not Great for the prospects of future full employment

There is literally no point in going down without a fight. You comply, you lose, and you allow the administration to outsource its fascism. You fight, you just might win.

Speakers at WelcomePAC have mentioned being dunked on by BlueSky posters no less than a dozen times in the first hour alone. This site has broken their brains

The world will be a better place when people realize that ~90% of DC-types who are selling a book are grifters who are full of shit. That's true even when they are saying something that reaffirms your worldview.

Liberals in particular, but really everyone left of center, are about as effective right now as Confucian intellectuals against Qin unification or Xia Xia expansion, and for similar reasons
