On tonight's Science in Action, climate scientist @adamsobel.bsky.social lets loose on the NOAA raid, the restrictions revealed in Wired's scoop, and his fears for the damage that may done to climate science more generally in coming months/years. bsky.app/profile/wire...

Does it stand any chance?

I'm not sure how effective a set of voluntary standards on private models will be if the modelers are not interested in being evaluated or compared. Users would have to demand it, I suspect (as opp to academics calling for it). I'd be in favor of trying though!

Sure but who has the authority to impose standards and benchmarks if govt is unable or uninterested?

It's def time. Q is how to do it. It's hard to do operational things at scale from academia, govt so far hasn't really found a good way to support it (and next 4 yrs don't look good) and if one takes private money then there will be pressure to close the IP. Hence we need to organize.

IMO the way to go is to build up the climate risk modeling capability in the public sector, where intercomparison and openness are the norm. I don't think there's another feasible way out of the opaque wild west situation we currently have.

Indeed @simonameiler.bsky.social picked it up and did a great job, whatever was doable with a few academic models. But any near-future effort will still have to contend with the fact that most clim risk models are private and most vendors see little incentive to intercompare.

Sorry I've been gone a while. Indeed we tried in 2017 ish to do a TC intercomparison with both public and private models. Fell apart when the top private vendors pulled out (after we agreed to do everything they wanted to accommodate IP concerns).

You too! Some people appreciate the direct approach, it's not everyone's cup of tea...

Sorry I kind of dropped off this site for a while, sorry for the slow reply. Much appreciate the kind words. Yes, I wrote that line, and my co-authors and the reviewers somehow all let it stay in, somewhat to my surprise :)
