Very sorry to hear. Sounds like an incredibly weak rationale

I had totally forgotten about that SBL session on the 25th anniversary of the Early Jewish-Christian relations section. Fun to reread your intro and also the pieces themselves. Thanks for posting!

So I wonder whether those who grew up in a bilingual household have an easier time learning new languages as adults, given that they must have already developed the ability to distinguish the important sounds for two different systems.

I notice the call for papers doesn't mention the costs that contributors usually have to pay to have their articles published in Religions. The cost is 1800 Swiss Francs, which is close to 2000 USD.

Jousting with John (a collection of 30 of my gazillion essays/articles on the Fourth Gospel). Meant for picking and choosing. Out on Dec 30 from de Gruyter.

We will see how it all shakes down this time around. The situation is of course made much more complex by the developments in the US, which don't bode well for us up here north of the 49th parallel.

As do I. But only one. It's ancient and still works fine.

I did Italian Duolingo for a couple of years and found it very helpful for comprehension and less so for conversation. I imagine that's similar for other languages.

I sampled Yiddish Duolingo and found the accent to be a mishmash and the sentences strange. I imagine the YIVO courses are better on both those fronts. Yiddish was מאמע לושן when I was growing up as my folks were Bundist survivors and recent immigrants to Canada.

Very niche question.

I need this. But given that EACH no is to be celebrated, how about a cocktail after each no instead of waiting for ten?

Fantastic! Thanks for this!

I always assign lots of small, very specific assignments and no major essays. Something lost, something gained. The downside: I'm marking short papers all semester long. The upside: students keep up with the course and (generally) their writing improves through weekly practice.

I received mine late morning. I imagine they are going out in batches. Haven't been to the AJS in years, looking forward to it.

True but they can also feel like freebies.
