If you slash NIH funding, this is what you’re slashing: life saving research

The poster child for white male mediocrity, Pete Hegseth, is firing qualified Black men and women from the military.

Gov. Mills: I’ll comply with the state and federal laws Trump: We are the federal law. You better do it because you’re not going to get any federal funds. Gov Mills: See you in court

This is how it’s done.

Dark skies reflect my sadness at the firings of all the humans that help keep the #GreatLakes as healthy as possible. Tonight I mourn the loss of the 14 @usfws.bsky.social employees that kept the invasive sea lamprey at bay. My fishery will be hurt. 😢😢🌊🌊

Brilliant segment on the vital role the NIH exercises in advancing Alzheimer’s research to unlock future treatments. Strong and very recent bipartisan support. Well done and thank you @maddow.msnbc.com

So much winning.

— Accidentally fired workers trying to contain bird flu — Accidentally fired workers overseeing our nuclear stockpile — Accidentally fired workers providing health care to Native Americans “Accidentally.” More like gross incompetence and mismanagement. Opposite of efficient.

The FAA's sudden dismissal of probationary employees has caused widespread confusion and frustration as industry professionals and the public react to the Musk Administration’s pointless cost-cutting and workforce reduction measures, which fly in the face of aviation safety. youtu.be/i8KB-J3Mu-0

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 1%, it can collect $13. For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 0.1%, it can collect $26. Laying off 7,000 IRS employees (during tax season) isn't about efficiency. It's about making it easier for the rich to evade taxes.

A consequence of electing Trump. I hope all who voted for him are feeling happy. This will affect them too.

A reminder of why basic science is important. If scientists had not been studying Gila monsters’ venom, we would not have semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy’s active molecule).

A Must Read👇 "Once our justice system is destroyed and replaced with one in which power and cronyism make adherence to laws optional, who will want to spend large amounts of money on highly credentialed and knowledgeable lawyers trained to counsel clients in how to comply with them?"

Example here of NIH scientists being unready to deal with Trump and Musk. Aspects of the grants memo were blatantly illegal and the legal justification in it was stupid. They were given an hour? Someone at NIH should have noted the illegality and found a way to delay —then leaked it like crazy. 🧪

🧪What happens when you feed a large language model long strings of DNA instead of words? My Stanford colleague @brianhie.bsky.social has done just that, to remarkable effect. His elegant, complex, impactful new tool is lucidly described here for a lay audience: news.stanford.edu/stories/2025...

🧪 Evo-2, the largest AI model for biology, is here. Trained on 128K genomes, it can generate entire chromosomes and decode noncoding DNA linked to disease. Scientists see it as an "app store" for biology. 🧬💻
