Nearly one in 10 adults in the U.S. don’t lie about being
LGBTQ, according to a large analysis from
Gallup released Thursday
almost triple the share since Gallup began counting in 2012, and up by two-thirds since 2020. It’s expected to rise to 1 in 5 when MAGA finally comes out.
With the bisexual that is just about right for the entire planet, and it’s not just limited to our species. The only reason it had 3x since Gallup began is that it is less of a shame to admit it. I’m proud of everyone who answered truthfully, because for many it’s hard to admit even to oneself.
P.S., if you're homophobic you are NOT straight, you're just a coward. People secure in their sexuality don't feel threatened by what other people are doing.
Yeah that's pretty spot on. Even in the late 90's the consensus (in Canada, idk about the US) was that about 10% of people were lgbt. So I don't know where they got that data from in 2012.
I was visiting, with my mom, my cousins catholic school in the late 80’s when i was around 7 years old. I ran down the empty hallway when a nun came out of a classroom and grabbed me, I got hit 2-3 times before my mom grabbed her by her habit/hair and yanking her to the ground. “Damn that felt good”
I think one of my siblings got the ruler because he was a leftie in the 70’s in Ireland. Same guy nearly cut his foot off with a chainsaw… can’t fix awkwardness
My cousin was forced to use his right hand by his parents in the 60s. I had a coworker who did the same thing to her kid in the 90s. Both had trouble learning to read
My uncle had his arm tied to his body in school to prevent him from using his left hand. The amount of child abuse committed in the guise of forced conformity is obscene.
My mother was physically assaulted in school for writing with her left hand in the 50s. She didn't learn to write until she moved to a different school where that didn't happen.
She was almost a teenager before she learned to write.
I’m not surprised. In such a bland, one language culture where 24/7 news is fodder for the cattle, and shopping, how else does one individuate themselves to find their own self identity. They try alternative.
It is likely it’s more than 10%. Being LGBT is actually not that uncommon. It’s an umbrella term for being anything from a gay trans person to just being slightly attracted to the same sex to just being a cis het person that doesn’t like gender roles. It is very diverse and inclusive.
Well if you make it this broad then ig it'd be way more than 10%, but I thought its the generic Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer group, which would be a small subset of the population
It's ALWAYS BEEN 1/10 ... The difference isn't "whooooo more gay trans ..be afraid!!"
.
The difference is the lgbtq people are more comfortable identifying themselves.
.
There's a reason why the "musical theatre" and "prefers company of men" euphemisms are at least 200 years old.
Research has shown the number is about 17% in ALL SPECIES. Only humans lie about it. The number of closeted LGBTQ members, especially those with resources, is still very high.
As acceptance increases, number go up. Don't know what to tell you! I guess that's sad news to a publication that has been actively demonising queer people for a while now. Yea, you can do better!
Oh, it was just a snarky way of saying the 90% may have issues surrounding their sexuality such that they become somewhat obsessive over the sexuality of others. I'm sure it's nowhere near 90% but you know, me being snarky.
If you believe as I do that people are born gay or straight then there's no more gay people today than there's ever been. Being open about is the difference. Hell, being gay was a felony in quite a few states just 30 or 40 years ago.
Actually, sexual orientation and gender identity are both natural variations of human diversity, backed by biology and psychology. They’re all part of the same spectrum of human experience, no matter how you try to divide them.
Frank, L. G. (1986). Social structure of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta). Journal of Mammalogy, 67(3), 347-363.
Hyenas, mammals. If you also had any critical thinking you’d realize that humans have novel behavior that is not seen in other animals. Like how other animals have unique features.
and that jump in 2020-2024! existential threat on the one hand and people being pulled out of normal social routines on the other, you get a bunch of realizations and safer circumstances to come out, or work on doing so.
10% is an archaic figure from decades ago, of the percentage of ppl “brave” enough to identify on an anonymous questionnaire. More misinformation. We know so much more about how ppl identify now, and it’s much higher numbers and more complex than broad categories!
this isn't an estimate, this is a small sample size survey result. if there was a census where everyone reported honestly the results might be different
I worry that the current administration, and the embrace of Christian Nationalism generally, is going to drive more people back into the closet (which seems to be the intent). It will be interesting to see how people "self identify" in future studies.
Nah, they'll be alright. The younglings are a helluva lot braver, smarter, and more ruthless than any of the rest of us. The old fascist-ass, bigot-ass dipshits ain't up for that fight, and if they choose to have it anyway, they will not only lose, they will be utterly decimated in the process.
President Trump said "Zelesky has no cards” and is not “important to be at meetings,” as he warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could take all of Ukraine “if he wanted” on Friday.
This dangerous arrogance of deciding about Ukraine without Ukrainians should fill everyone with disgust!
More people for the NYT to brutalize and argue shouldn’t have human rights! I’m sure Azeen Ghorayshi, David French and Michelle Goldberg are thrilled to have more victims for their jihad!
Love to see more people being comfortable enough to come out and be themselves!
This reminds me of how, in the early 1900s, few reported being left-handed due to societal pressure forcing right handedness. As that pressure lessened, more people were comfortable reporting themselves as a lefty.
It’s ironic in a way because the fascists are normalizing hate, bigotry, etc and are empowering that behavior. So they are the living embodiment of the that phrase, too. Just in a very negative way.
I am naturally left-handed but was forced to write with my right hand starting in kindergarten.
The result is that I am now functionally ambidextrous. When I broke my right arm and had it in cast in second grade, my teacher was amazed when I just switched to my left hand.
This is a great analogy because evolutionary theory suggests similar advantages as with left handedness at around the same % occurrence. I’d expect the “identification” curve to stabilize once it becomes completely destigmatized.
...and think of what an important role you've played in making their lives unnecessarily difficult and dangerous! You must be very proud of yourselves! Fuckheads
Yeah, the numbers seem off in the article to be honest
I think this is more to do with people being more open about it than they were in my/our generation
so suppressed sexuality is less common with younger generations, well according to the stats in the article....at least that's my take
Along with other media, the NYT has form for spreading the misinformation and prejudice, and uncritically platforming those with homophobic and transphobic beliefs, that enables hate, discrimination, and abuse
But despite this LGBTIQA+ folk, increasingly confident in who they are, are resisting ✊🏼🏳️🌈
When I was in college (1992-1997) the LGBTQ dorm on campus (catering/friendly to LGBTQ, not mandated) was called the 2 in 20 dorm referencing the 10% statistic back then. This Times article seems to insinuate it’s a new thing but best I can tell, it’s not that new.
The number of people in the US who are not afraid to tell pollsters they identify as LGBTQ as reached a new high thanks to efforts to provide a safe space where they could come out. I predict this number goes down as the repression intensifies, and people return to the closet for safety.
Please, for the love of God do some better reporting. Call what is happening what it is, in plain words so that the public knows. It's nazism. This is your responsibility as journalists and purveyors of free speech, one of the fundamental tenets of a democracy. Shame on you, New York Times.
The 5G gay rays are doing their work. The densest cluster is in the heart of DC. Trump and Elon have fallen into our trap! They may think they are badass now but in 2 years one will be wearing bunny ears and eye shadow and the other diapers and seeking an online daddy. You guess which will be which.
I would think in this political environment 99.9% of the LGBTQ community are Democrats or Independents. I can’t fathom a WORLD where they would choose to be REPUBLICANS.
If that is true is almost certain that a lot of them didn’t vote (or are trumpers🤮) and are learning valuable life lessons at this time.

I’m thinking about sending them a few questions on my own and withholding services if they don’t answer. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
1. Does your company support DEI standards?
2. How many H1B engineers are at your company?
2/x
3. How many H1B engineers will be working on the current projects we are working on?
4. Did you contribute to Donald Trump’s Inauguration?
5. If yes, how much was contributed.
6. If yes, will the contributions continue?
3/x
7. Will I have to hide/suppress the two MtF employees that I have, and will I need to dead name them on future reports.
It’s a start, but I’m looking for more suggestions. I’m close to retirement, and my employees are certainly capable of working for other companies. 4/x
In 1948, sex researcher Alfred Kinsey famously claimed that 10% of the men he'd studied were "more or less exclusively homosexual." The idea that 1 in 10 men were gay was quickly rejected and the study Kinsey used to justify it was criticized for its methodology and limited sample size
I went to HS in the 70s. I knew a few gay guys (but they weren't out). I am confident that in 1975 there were just as many LGBTQ+ people as there are now, but most remained in the proverbial closet. I worked with a guy - in SF - who didn't come out until late in life after his parents died.
Also, just checked your profile, and it’s absolutely clear why you are a fan of Maher. You’re a right wing troll praising DOGE and Elon and shitting on anyone left of Hitler.
I take it you are unaware that Maher has spent the last 5 yrs shrieking incessantly about “wokeness”, blaming minorities for every ill, platforming the most genocidal extremists & pushing some of the most pernicious anti-LGBTQ rhetoric imaginable.
There is nothing excellent about Bill Maher on this or any topic. He is a bigot and reactionary, and a PROLIFIC purveyor of anti-LGBTI disinformation and hateful rhetoric.
I'm sure there is some small truth some some of that growth may be straight-ish women who consider themselves queer in some way because they may not be 100% straight. but a large percent is people who are more comfortable being trans or gay or whatever. and even so, who cares about a rise
If someone isn’t 100% straight then they’re LGBT. The increase in data might be a result of people being more comfortable with the idea that sexuality isn’t necessarily 100% gay or 100% straight for everyone, and someone who maybe isn’t gay but also not exactly straight, being open about that.
I would say then that is basically a description of the small truth that some small percentage may be a "fad" in some way, but it's not bad and doesn't even matter at all to me how people label.

Should they do a visibility comparison between scout leaders, priests and paedophiles?
If (or when) this unfolds, can we please get a statement or reaction videos from Log Cabin Republicans? 🤔
Please get an education.

No, it proves people were *starting* to feel safe enough to be themselves in public.

"10% of the population has always been non-hetero throughout history."
This statistic is not really New is it
But on the other side the narrative being spread by the right wing, that kids are being turned gay by LGBTect is b*******
So I'm not sure why I am expecting some great insights from the NYT these days.

Do not pretend to be any ally to LGBT people.
There was always at least "nearly 1 in 10", they just wouldn't tell you out of fear.
