*Every single headline* about a scientific/medical advance right now should include the funding source I'm reading & discussing a bunch of papers w/ my class. I don't usually point out funders (almost always NIH/NSF/USDA for this class). You can bet your patooties I'm gonna do that from now on

Federal career workers: We appreciate you and your work. You don't deserve this mistreatment. Here's a file with lots of resources if you are facing illegal termination. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Woke up mad! So I folded the laundry, did the dishes, and added more helpful links to my gregpak.link old school directory page. Check it out!

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

I've been seeing lots of super compelling videos of park rangers and federal lawyers and other federal workers telling their stories. Talking about what they did at their job, how it helped the American people, and why they want to keep doing those jobs. This is the way.

This. When you support a king, you make yourself a beggar.

ICYMI, last week we published an interactive map of more than $300 billion worth of Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law funding. Enter your ZIP code or city and a search radius and find projects in your area: grist.org/accountabili...

On this day from AP News. Just remember... it can happen here. It has.

A good thing to do if you are flailing a bit right now (as who is not??) is to get in touch with your own values, the things that you find life affirming and necessary in the world. Read some inspiring works about things you value - labor solidarity, scientific achievement, social justice.

This is happening, right now. The great "arribada" (arrival) of mother Olive Ridley sea turtles on the Odisha coast, where they dig sand-nests & lay their eggs, driven by ancient instinct. Heart-lifting, magnificent, moving: part of a geography of hope. 🎞️ by Bivash Pandav via my friend Yuvan Aves.

Happy national battery day

Vaccines are as close to literal magic as humanity we’ll ever get. A serum that protects you against invisible enemies that used to literally decimate your whole community

Out there. Doing the work.

Possibly the single most accurate description of parenting from 1970-89 ever written.

Just in case: @statnews.com has backed up and is monitoring #CDC 's data. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Yes, people dislike wearing face masks but reality is that with all the viruses circulating (COVID, bird flu, regular flu, RSV) you can choose to be a little uncomfortable wearing a mask in public -or- you can choose to be sick constantly. That's what our options are really coming down to.

The termination of 850 Indian Health Service physicians, nurses, and dentists will have a grave impact on access to care for millions of Native Americans. Upholding our treaty obligations is not optional.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

We weren’t meant to thrive in a fast paced work environment we were meant to collect berries in the summertime and lie down for a whole day after mistaking the bad orange mushroom for the good orange mushroom

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

With an anti-science conspiracy theorist leading the US Department of Health and Human Services, preventative action is critical to protecting your health and the health of your community. A good place to start would be getting back into the practice of regularly wearing a mask.

What is happening to us personally and our organizations is not an isolated experience, it's a collective experience. One that fundamentally shifts how we process information, how we imagine transformation, and how we build communities of connection and care. Join us! adawaygroup.com/polycrisis/

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

Scientists first collected a pig butt worm from the dark ocean depths near Monterey, California. The size of marbles, pigbutts are a near complete mystery. Officially described in 2007, scientists aren’t even sure if the pigbutt form is an adult, or just a very very awkward adolescent stage.

NOAA staff have been told to stop all contact with foreign nationals, which threatens the nature of the agency’s work; international cooperation is crucial to both weather and fisheries because the atmosphere and ocean aren’t limited to US borders. www.fastcompany.com/91274927/tru...

This administration is shutting down the pipeline that made US medical research the envy and the model for the world. This impacts all of us as we fail to train the researchers who will make the discoveries that are turned into treatments and cures

Appreciate her speaking the truth

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

THIS IS WHY WE FUND NOAA YOU FOOLS.

This not good. The more humans that get bird flu the more risk of it interacting with a human flu and becoming transmittable human to human. Also no one want to lose their puddy tats...
