Louis Blériot, who made the first cross-channel flight in 1909 in a Blériot IX, here seen in a Blériot XII. The XII first flew May1909. In Aug1909 it set a speed record at a 10 km circuit: 77 km/h (!). At least 3 were constructed. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

Prototype of the Vickers Vanguard medium range turboprop airliner, which first flew in Jan1959. It was introduced late 1960 in BEA service, also Trans-Canada Air Lines ordered Vanguards. Only 44 were produced, from the 1970ies mainly in freighter configuration. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

The famous and formidable US Vought F4U Corsair fighter, which saw extensive operations during World War II in the Pacific and in the Korean War. Over 12500 were produced. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

Lovely picture of Derby Airways Canadair North Star/C-4 Argonaut G-ALHS. The Argonaut was a Canadian development of the Douglas DC-4 with Rolls Royce Merlin engines giving it a much higher cruising speed. G-ALHS was manufactured in 1949, it was withdrawn from use in 1968 and scrapped. #Aviation

The beautiful North American A-5A Vigilante carrier based supersonic bomber, here at a Paris Air Show. First flight Aug1958, in service with the US Navy in 1961. Only 167 were produced. Reconnaissance version RA-5C saw service in the Vietnam war. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

The French Nord Gerfaut experimental aircraft. Two produced, first flight January 1954. It was the first European aircraft that could reach Mach 1 in horizontal flight without use of afterburner. It set several climb records, most notable 3 min 46 sec to 15 kmin Feb1956. #Aviation

US Air Force Boeing B-47E 53-4213, placed as monument near Wichita, KS, where it was produced in 1956. Since 1988 it is on display at McConnell AFB, Wichita. Over 2000 of this impressive six-engined Cold War era bomber were produced in the 1950ies. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

Japan Air Lines (JAL) Boeing 727-46 JA8319 “Kitakami” was delivered in 1966. It ended its career in 1996, when it was scrapped Colombia. The Boeing 727 entered service in 1964 and was one the most popular jetliners of the 1960/1970ies with over 1800 produced. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

Aero Commander 680V Astafan Commander F-WSTM, here at the ILA Hanover 1972, was a standard Commander 680V modified by Miles Aircraft in the UK with Turbomeca Astafan jet engines as testbed for Turbomeca. First flew Mar 1971. Aircraft is reportedly preserved at Perignan since 1991. #Aviation

The nicely designed Cessna T303 Crusader six seat twin first flew in 1978. Less than 300 were produced. OO-VJI was active in 1982 only, still active in Germany as D-ITPJ #Aviation #Aircraft

Lockheed L-188C Electra, of which 170 were produced between 1957 and 1961. Here N385AC of Air California, which was delivered in 1959 to Qantas, in 1967 to Air California and transferred 1973 to Ecuador, where it was withdrawn from use after a wheels-up landing in 1989. #Aviation

Lockheed T-33 jet trainer, of which over 6500 were produced between 1958 and 1959 and used by many NATO air forces. The pictured aircraft flew between 1954 and 1957 with the US Air Force, then transferred to the West-German airforce (Luftwaffe), Mar1972 salvaged at Jever. #Aviation #Aircraft

Swissair Douglas DC-2-115B HB-ITE, which was in use between 1935 and 1952, here seen pre-war at Croydon, London. In 1952 it was sold in South-Africa but it crashed in bad weather within a month in Sudan with 2 killed. #Aviation #Aircraft #History

In 1975 Boeing proposed the 747 (as KC-33A) for the US Air Force Advanced Cargo Transport Aircraft (ACTA) program. It also included midair refueling capacities here demonstrated (using the Boeing 747 prototype) with a B-52 bomber. Boeing lost the bid against the McDonnell Douglas KC-10A. #Aircraft

Bellanca 28-90 bomber, which was developed from the 28-70 air racer (designed for the 1934 London-Melbourne race). In total 43 were produced for the Republic army in the Spanish Civil War, but non of the aircraft reached Spain. Instead, the aircraft ended up in China and Mexico. #Aircraft #History

The spectacular British Aircraft Corp TSR-2 bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It first flew in Sep1964, here seen with a Canberra as chase plane. Just before a second prototype would make its first flight, in Apr1965, the project was cancelled due to excessive costs. #Aviation

Saab 210 research aircraft, used to investigate the double-delta wing configuration for the Saab 35 Draken fighter. First flight in January 1952. Later modified with air intakes in the wing root. It made about 900 flight until late 1955, now part of the Air Force Museum in Linköping. #Aviation

Pan American Boeing 707-321 N451PA at Hong Kong Kai Tak airport in 1967, the year the aircraft was delivered. In 1977, being converted as cargo plane, it was transferred to Ronair and leased to Iran Air, 1979 to Ecuadoriana Jet Cargo, later AECA Cargo, scrapped in 2000 in Ecuador. #Aviation

Sikorsky S-64A Skycrane N325Y during tests with the Budd Company Skylounge detachable module in 1967. Apparently the tests were not succesfull or financial problems emerged: the module was not taken into production. #Aviation #History #Helicopters

French Microjet 200, powered by two 1.3 kN Microturbo turbojets, first flew in June 1980. The prototype, seen here, was constructed of wood. Three pre-production Microjets were of mixed construction. Project failed to gain interest and only 4 were produced. #Aerospace #Aviation

The spectacular Latécoère 631 flying boat, developed in the late 1930s. The prototype flew for the first time in 1942 and was seized by the Germans. The second prototype (pictured here) flew in 1945. Only 10 were produced and were saw limited service on transatlantic routes until 1955. #Aviation

Lockheed P-80B Shooting Star, the first US operational jet fighter. First flight Jan1944. Over 1700 were produced, which saw extensive service in the Korean War. From the late 1950ies they were replaced by the F-86 Sabre. The T-33 trainer was related to the P-80 and much longer active. #Aviation

The iconic Bell 206 JetRanger, which first flew in 1962. Developed from the YOH-4, destined for the US Army but not selected. Between 1962 and 2017 about 7300 were produced in several versions (most notably: 206L LongRanger stretched version) with also many military users #Aviation #Helicopter

Tomorrow 19 year ago: spectacular crash of a US Air Force Lockheed Galaxy at Dover AFB, DE, USA. After take off a problem with a thrust reverser occurred. The crew left in error 2 engines at idle and used a wrong flap setting. During approach it crashed into a field. Nobody injured. #Aviation

I admire the Piper Cub! Here a J3C-65. Designed as sports plane in the late 1930ies, over 20000 were produced in the Second World War as reconnaissance, liaison and ground control aircraft. The particular aircraft, OO-COR, is still flying in Ireland as EI-AFE. #Aviation #Aerospace #Airplace

Jurca MJ-2A Tempête, was designed in the 1950ies as homebuilt aircraft. This aircraft, F-PXKC, was built in 1977, in 1998 it crashed and was written off. It is estimated that over 60 were build. #Aviation #Aerospace #Airplace

Lockheed L-1329 JetStar business jet. Just over 200 were produced between 1961 and 1980. Eastern Airways used 2 JetStars in the early 1970ies. For nowadays standard, the name WhisperStar would be laughable, the 4 Garrett turbofans produced anything but whispers….. #Aviation #Aerospace #Airplace

Air France Douglas C-47A F-BJRY was delivered in Feb1944 to the US Army Air Force, later to the RAF and from 1948 operating in Tunisia as F-BAXX, later as TS-AXX and between May1961 and Oct1973 F-BJRY for Air France. In 1973 exported to the USA, in the 1980ies it was scrapped at Miami. #Aviation

RAF De Havilland DH106 Comet 2R XK695 was delivered in Jan1953 to BOAC as G-AMXH; in Aug1956 it was transferred to the RAF. In Jan1975 it went to the Imperial War Museum. Now only the cockpit section/forward fuselage remains which is on display at the de Havilland Heritage Museum. #Aviation

LTU Sud SE210 Caravelle 10R D-ABAP, which was delivered to LTU in 1969; in 1979 it was transferred to SAT Flug and in 1986 to Istanbul Airlines as TC-ARI. In 1988 it was taken in use as instructional airframe in Turkey. In total 282 Caravelles were produced between 1958 and 1972. #Aviation #Avgeek

McDonnell Douglas DC-8-63 YV-C-VIB was delivered to VIASA Venezuela in 1969 was in 1975 reregistered to YV-126C. It ended its career as cargo aircraft for Emery Worldwide, withdrawn from use in 2001 and scrapped in 2004 at Roswell, NM #Aviation #Avgeek #Airplane

French Potez 630 multirole combat aircraft; first flight April 1936 and operational from late 1938. About 1400 were produced, which flew for French, Vichy-French and Free French Air Force, but also for instance the air forces of Greece, Hungary, Germany and Romania used variants. #Aviation

Hunting-Percival P.84 Jet Provost trainers of the RAF (British Air Force) “Red Pelicans” display team in 1964. Originally equipped with 4 aircraft, from 1963 extended to 6. They were until 1965 the primary RAF display team, then the Red Arrows took over. In 1973 the team was disbanded. #Aviation

The nicely designed German Klemm KL-107B sport plane. First flight in 1940 but only 7 were produced until the Klemm factory was destroyed by bombs. In 1955 production restarted, after 54 produced Bölkow developed it further as Bo 207, adding another 92 examples in the 1960ies. #Aerospace #Aviation

Kaman H-43B Husky with its distinctive intermeshing rotors, designed by German engineer Anton Flettner. The Huski first flew in April 1953, from 1958 in use with mainly US military service for search and rescue and fire fighting. In total 370 were produced. #Aerospace #Aviation #Avgeek
