No matter how preposterous, the Times headlines nearly every Trump story as if it were written by the White House comms team.

A good, timely piece--but she leaves out the obvious solution: take DoJ out of the Exec branch & put it under the federal judiciary. Doing so would put DoJ beyond any president's reach in terms of politicization. Also, all USAOs should be career civil servants, not political hacks.

AOC has them sputtering mad because she’s educating people on constitutional rights. You don’t see them freaking out at Jeffries for talking about egg prices.

My latest. As journalists and writers, we have a duty to use language that is accurate and describes our current reality. I’m no longer going to talk about DEI/Anti-DEI. Let’s be clear. We are facing racial purges and re-segregation. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Latest data from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social shows: January 2025 was the warmest January globally on record 🌡️ 1.75ºC above pre-industrial level 🌊 Second highest global SST, 0.19°C below January 2024  #ClimateAction 🧪⚒️🌍

If you judge by the number of stories, the number of authors involved, the tone, the duration of coverage ... you can't help but conclude that the NYT found the fact that Biden is old much more alarming than the fact that an unelected tech nazi is illegally taking over key government systems.

When protestors uttered the slogan “defund the police” the national media had a massive freak out. But now that Trump wants to actually gut the FBI and (it would seem) illegally fire 1000s of people who work there, the same media sees it as a curiosity, a dull bureaucratic matter.

Bunch of people in my TL arguing that impeachment is useless bc it didn’t get him out of office the first time. That misunderstands what impeachment is for. Ideally that’s a result, but it’s also a systematic public litigation of fitness. It’s a chance to make a coherent public case all at once

We have to give people room grow and learn. Sure, Beattie wrote some intemperate things in the past. But I'm sure he's accumulated a lot of life experience and done a lot of maturing since . . . . . . October of 2024.

The first Senators to actually do anything about the Trump admin

Musk should go to federal prison for years for this. Just like any other non-government employee without any sort of clearance would be if they took control of this information. truthout.org/articles/mus...

"California law is unaffected by recent changes to federal policy and continues to provide safeguards against discrimination and harassment based on gender, gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. ....Our commitment to safeguarding the rights of all students persists."

This is a coup d'état. It doesn’t matter that some of the people involved were elected, they have illegally usurped the mechanisms of government and halted lawfully enacted functions. That is a coup.

Frustrated there's not more I can do directly, but for now I can just try to document reality. Elon is bringing his Twitter destruction playbook to the US government, and it's impossible to explain just how serious and bad this is. www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

My favorite fact about the NYC subway is that there are way more daily riders (about 4 million) than the number of people who fly in the US out of all airports every day (~2.5 million). The scale is hard to get a grasp on.

Four examples of Democratic messaging since yesterday. I know which one I'm supporting. And voting for.

CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) has provided real-time data and analysis about disease outbreaks and emerging health threats without a break every week since 1960. Until today.

There's another name for what they're building for people who have not committed crimes.

@jvl.bsky.social with the perfect quote: "That’s the dual hermeneutic the populists use for evaluating the world. If you’re an expert who got one thing wrong, it damns you. If you’re a total lunatic crank who gets one thing right, it makes makes you bulletproof."

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Again, this immediately ends any other presidency from Truman to Obama & we never have a single “we simply don’t know how to handle this” media discussion. I don’t understand why we pretend Trump has superpowers that render everyone useless & powerless to do their jobs. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

In 2006, we determined that climate change would drive "consistent shifts in Santa Ana events from earlier to later in the season" and said this "may significantly increase the extent of CA coastal areas burned by wildfires, loss of life, and property." Here we are today.... @umairfan.bsky.social

In 2020, only 3.6% of the world’s population lived outside their country of birth. People only leave their homes when they're desperate. If conservatives really care about immigration, they would focus on stopping climate change. Because that's going to cause refugee numbers to skyrocket.

If "those darn kids" trumps encouraging ebikes as a climate solution in California of all places, we are truly in deep trouble

Norway looks like it's going to hit its goal: 100% of new cars sold in 2025 onward will be electric. In 2024, it was 88%. (Somebody should really tell them that EVs don't work in cold weather!)

It was always obvious who and what Trump was. One of the things I’m proudest of in this life. Eat it, Josh.

Im not American at all, but it is striking to me having lived there for years, how American politicians and journalists baby their billionaires while treating school shooting survivors, victims and their families like annoying pests

BREAKING: 750+ musicians are now calling on major labels to drop their $621 million lawsuit against @archive.org — a suit that could destroy the entire nonprofit. Letter sign ons remain open until Wednesday at SaveTheArchive.com

After years of talking to Trump supporters my view of them has become very simple: They want socialist, even sometimes progressive reforms but they want them from someone who makes those reforms feel powerful and masculine and they want to make sure the people they don't like don't benefit from them

Here are two NYT headlines about shootings this week. You'd think that the one with evocative, emotional language ("tragic"), that centers the need for safety, and was written by an army of reporters would be the one about two kindergarteners getting shot at school, but buddy, this is America.
