Back in the mid-20th century, the FBI could place an individual under surveillance solely for being LGBTQ. This is what enabled the anti-queer witch hunts of the McCarthy era. Now, DHS permits surveillance of LGBTQ people again. Just being queer makes you a suspect. www.advocate.com/politics/dhs...

The remains of a missing Native American girl were found in the woods near Globe, Arizona. I want this to get as much exposure and out cry as Gaby Petito did. She was only 14. A baby. Our people deserve better.

I wrote for @msmagazine.com about the anti-trans Executive Order and the value of studying gender and the Liberal Arts. msmagazine.com/2025/02/24/w...

Enough with the rationalizations and excuses: the Nazi salute is not a troll, and it is not an accident. The neo-Nazi movement is alive and well, and some of the most powerful people in our country have now actively embraced it.

It’s hard to go on with our daily lives as if the U.S. were not rushing toward dictatorship and fascism, as if global instability as a result of Trump’s echoing Putin’s propaganda were not to escalate, as if genocide were not happening across the pond, supported by taxpayer money.

If I have any credibility or goodwill among you, please please please read this. REVIVING THE FEDERAL DEATH PENALTY AND LIFTING THE MORATORIUM ON FEDERAL EXECUTIONS, applying to “aliens, who traverse our borders and remain in the United States without legal status.” www.justice.gov/ag/media/138...

The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Friends who are immigrants in the US and can safely strike, here’s the info. I am joining in.

The opposite of diversity is segregation. The opposite of equity is hoarding resources. The opposite of inclusion is exclusion. We need to name that these are segregationists who are excluding to hoard resources.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Focus on 1 or 2 things. Go deep on those. Focus on "news" about those things first and foremost. Think about the concrete actions you can take to impact those ONE or TWO things.

Civil rights were won through protests and lawsuits and literally fighting back. We are not in unprecedented times. We are in a horrible reboot of Reconstruction. Fight in every way possible. Flood those anti DEI tiplines with misinformation, spend 10 minutes every day telling your reps to stop this

Fellow scientists, please consider speaking w/ media about what this means for "regular Americans." The link below is to contact a reporter who's collecting stories about the unfolding NIH situation - pls share anonymously or on record. @anniewaldman.bsky.social www.propublica.org/people/annie...

Just FYI, administrative warrants (like the ones used by ICE) are not judicial warrants (used by cops, signed by a judge). You do NOT legally have to open the door for an ICE officer with an administrative warrant *no matter what the ICE officer says.*

The media has focused on wealthy, White neighborhoods. But the fire in Altadena--a racially and economically diverse suburb--deserves more attention, because insurance may not cover their rebuilding costs, forcing families out and leading the neighborhood to gentrify. www.reuters.com/world/us/far...

My first job out of college was in computers. I was a philosophy major. The interviewer asked what philosophy had to do with coding. I said: One of the main issues when you code is noticing the assumptions you don't even know you're making, since computers are very stupid ...

„The miracle of birth is so incredibly beautiful to behold. Do you know the only thing that could make it better? Percussion. Nothing calms one’s stress and eases the pain of delivering a baby than a little boy standing nearby absolutely shredding on his drum.”
