The antisemitism thing is also silly altogether. If they meant it, they would think about ways to really address antisemitism or protect Jews in Germany who are subject to violence in the streets. Neither is happening at any meaningful level. Instead we get this performative nonsense.

So this set of policies is squeezing the life out of what used to be one of the greatest cultural scenes in Europe.

Berlin is also experiencing a rental crisis and there are no federal or local measures forthcoming to address it that I know of. The cuts to the cultural budget also came with cuts to all sorts of public investment that are desperately needed.

I share the sentiment about the article, but it’s still true that this is a devastating blow to a crucial sector in the city. Clubs, theatres, museums, etc. may have to shut and/or won’t be affordable for the wider public.

Just the general weirdness of interacting with Germans!

Yes, that’s the one. I think it’s not as straightforward, but it can be reached by train. It’s definitely worth it, but Nuremberg and Munich alone are also great. Plus both cities have loads of history and sights to check out. From Munich you can also go south to the lakes / mountains.

Close to Nuremberg is Rothenburg, which is a small and well-preserved medieval town (probably best example in Germany), with a very pretty Christmas market.

I’d say fly into Munich or Frankfurt. If Munich, stay and check some of the Christmas markets in town. Get a train from either city to Nuremberg, which is the most famous Christmas market in a medieval setting.

This is fun for those among us who picked a fight with a racist relative over the abundance of Döner vs Bratwurst in small town Germany.

There was a classic post on the other site that went something like “go to Peckham McDonald’s on a Saturday at 4am and tell me there’s a god”
