An important conversation that is missing a piece: Why is so much "financialized" capital flowing into this neighbourhood, and not into the central lowrise areas with subways? toronto.uli.org/events/detai...

And the speed limit has remained to this day.

SCOOP: Canada is in advanced talks to participate in the new EU military industry project, highlighting how traditional US allies are teaming up to Trump-proof their military production. The budding deal would see Canada get EU contracts to build in Canadian factories.

Fun fact: these were also Prigozhin's last words.

Hi youth of Canada. We won't build you housing and we've squeezed public services and education to the breaking point. As compensation, you will be forced to join the military.

There is a lot of talk in Canada about building infrastructure, new trade relationships, renewed defence and ideas that are popular in the abstract. There is little talk about details, money, changing regulations and the tradeoffs needed to accomplish those things (usually unpopular).

While Toronto politicians and planners sit on a dysfunctional uber stop heavy transit system, Waterloo is making smart changes - removing stops and making remaining ones nicer. Good thing we have major metropolitan centres like . . . Waterloo, to show us the way

It’s actually insane they’re rerunning the Iraq WMD playbook

It's crazy this guy thinks it's about whether or not his take is wrong, and not what the consequences of an invasion would be for Canadians. American media brain really is something else

I still don't think most Americans realize how significant all of this is. You went from having a neighbor that would pretty much be with you through anything, and go along with whatever. That's completely different today.

people whose literal job was always meant to factor in political risk but who thought "political risk" was restricted to countries they couldn't find on a map

old Soviet joke for our times: Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to. Guy says: “looking for an obituary.” Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.” Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

again I point to 'liz truss but without the ability to remove liz truss' as the key to understanding what will likely happen in the next few months to the US economy.

👇🎯🧵 Defense spending is merely a symptom. If 🇩🇪/🇪🇺 really want/need to separate themselves militarily/monetarily from 🇺🇸, the entire economic model needs to change. A defense fund while continuing to believe the rest of the surplus/export-centric/low debt model is fine is a category error.

I now fundamentally believe that the bad reputation that Italy has for corruption compared to, say, US or Canada, is mostly due to the fact that Italians recognize it, call it by its name, and prosecute it, while other countries have simply legalized it, de iure or de facto.

1. Background to the epochal change in German and European politics after the election. Merz, the presumed next Chancellor has said that Europe is setting out to "achieve its independence from the US, step by step." @abenewman.bsky.social and I explain the background in our book, Underground Empire

POV: You're 16, believe being in advanced placement math class means you're a once in a generation genius, and have just discovered Reddit.

The liberals have the wonderful habit of making promises, then proposing insanely unrealistic timelines for completion that only make sense if they never lose another election and get to rule the country for an uninterrupted 25 years.

Canada is building HSR! 😮 Canada is actually committing $4 billion (the cost of some high speed lines) and another half decade (the time to build some high speed lines) to more studies and back and forth ("Co development"). 😭
