Yes, Canadians who are boycotting all things US, this seems like the only logical thing to do.

Come enjoy our sidewalks as you are ushered out of your car. They are very stable and safe to walk on in dress shoes.

If you live in Wisconsin, you need to get involved with Susan Crawford's campaign now. Far-right activists have been talking about this race since November. If you live out of state, consider phone banking for crawford or throwing dough to her campaign or grassroots groups organizing for her.

We are crowd sourcing reductions in graduate admissions and hiring freezes across biomedical research and higher ed in response to pauses in NIH funding and EO’s. If you have information if you could add to this spreadsheet, it would be greatly appreciated!: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Powerful & heartbreaking from @lukeharding1968.bsky.social on Trump’s attempts at extortion of Ukraine’s wealth. Essential reading. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

WATCH: “So far DOGE has saved enough to buy each of us 3 cups of coffee.” Economist Justin Wolfers on the *DOGE DIVIDEND* It’s all a trick. Their goal is tax cuts for the rich. And they never cared about the debt.

Yuuup! Dr. Carol Anderson’s book White Rage addresses this amazingly well. Black advancement always leads to white backlash. Every. Time.

“That is why Trumpists are so focused on “ending DEI” in the federal workforce. They see anti-discrimination and inclusion as a ladder of upward mobility for people they do not believe should have one.”

actual civic service

Not surprised that it's community colleges that are fighting back. Community colleges serve the greatest number of people facing systemic barriers. A large percentage of community college students are the first in their family to attend college.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

OREGON: “The house & senate are totally abdicating their responsibilities.” @RepBentz (R) is the latest Republican to get confronted by constituents at a town hall. (Tennessee folks— town halls are these things where senators/reps show up and you can talk to them in person)

The Trump Administration has cost our country over 22,406 American jobs. trumpcostsamerica.com

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

They're doing an end run around the courts.

Baldwin: "Last night, the president said 'I'm not touching Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, VA, I'm not touching them.' By this morning, he endorsed the House budget resolution which paves the way for massive cuts to Medicaid."

This is going to go on at many universities - the uncertainty will lead to fewer graduate programs. It will hobble scientific research which appears to be the goal.

Things hurting the US economy: -mass layoffs of federal workers -funding cuts to every federal dept -corporate layoffs -measles and tuberculosis outbreaks -high flu rates -$8/dozen eggs -new tariffs raising the cost of everything -Canada boycotts US travel and goods -concerns about airplane safety

From California to Cleveland, from Montana to Iowa, from Alaska to Atlanta, America’s unions were out in force this week to fight back against unaccountable billionaires. ✊

I am looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher to work with me in a project on social cleavages and political party competition in Europe: lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... Happy to answer any questions, and thanks in advance for circulating the call!

National Endowment for the Humanities bans all subjects smacking of humanity.

Anecdotal European stuff: I have spoken to a few Italians about the US “situation” lately and all are pretty much asking themselves the same question: where are the American opposition leaders? Where are Obama, Harris, Biden? Their absence is as horrifying as the acts of the current administration.

the stock market is now below where it was when Joe Biden left office

Whether in the courts or by way of pressure on the Trump Administration, DEMAND evidence of these claims of fraud and waste. You’d think Trump would be running to Congress & to court to show what they’ve found, and yet…crickets 🦗

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

Oh fuck, what a grift. J6 terrorists sue a DOJ controlled by Trump; Trump orders DOJ lawyers to settle for an undisclosed amount, both sides agree to an NDA. This can happen dozens, hundreds of times. Just an ingenious way to funnel tax dollars to far-right terrorist groups.

US business activity stalling, consumers' inflation expectations surge "Long-term inflation expectations highest since 1995" www.reuters.com/markets/us/t...

Daydreamed about an action along the lines of "A Day Without Science." I have no illusions about how this would be received by the far far right folks so feel free not to explain that to me.

CSPAN Caller from West Virginia: I’m a diabetic and I’m on Medicare. When Biden was in there, my insulin was $6 for a 28 day supply. I just went to CVS, it went back up to $80…

BREAKING via WSJ “The acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Caleb Vitello, was removed from his post, administration officials and other people familiar with the matter said, amid frustration in the Trump administration that deportations haven’t accelerated faster.”

It occurs to me that one helpful talking point that needs repetition until we're sick of it: Mass firing of federal employees will raise unemployment — and mean more qualified people are competing with *you* for good jobs.

It is both breaking my heart and making me incandescently angry that one of the few silver linings of covid is the rapid progression of mRNA vaccine treatments for cancers - right as the GOP has declared all out War both on science as a whole and on mRNA vaccines specifically.

NEW: “The first nationwide database tracking misconduct by federal police officers has been shut down by President Donald Trump, the Justice Department confirmed.” Because who cares about accountability in law enforcement, amirite? www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

The white mystery is “why make something unidentifiable yet rancid?”

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

Reports of IRS mass layoffs coming today. Roughly 10% of those expected to be affected are veterans, per former IRS commissioner Charles Rettig. More are current members of reserves or family members of active-duty military personnel. www.linkedin.com/posts/charle...

Every day is now January 6.

Five major airlines are suing to overturn a rule from then-Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg that actually holds airlines accountable for damaging disabled people's wheelchairs. New from me at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

New: Clearview AI's CEO Hoan Ton-That has resigned. After he led the company through controversy and lawsuits, the company struggled to secure big federal contracts. Now, Clearview is focused on selling to the Trump border effort and the Pentagon. www.forbes.com/sites/davidj...

NYT: in a bold gesture of solidarity, President Trump hands over the nuclear football to Vladimir Putin.

I was just an Education Department guy under Reagan and the most junior WH senior staffer under G.H.W. Bush, so what do I know? But if I were an ex-president, and the current president were executing the most disastrous turn in American foreign policy in 80 years, I think I might say something?

AOC speaking to a thousand NYC federal workers and allies about the urgency of resisting Musk 🔥🔥🔥

Looking for all those Republicans with pocket Constitutions who love to tweet about 1776

Someone posted that plane crashes would become as normalized as school shootings in this era. It doesn’t have to happen but it might.
