amazing to argue "there might be a new Democratic administration" before this affects some people. like this eo is fine actually because the next president could just repeal it ???

maybe just do the thing if you're going to take the backlash from it either way

and then I would introduce legislation to stop the thing

okay, sounds really bad, but let's also keep in mind that this story is sourced entirely from the police. This is all sounding very moral panic-y to me. Not saying it's not true, just saying let's take it with a grain of salt.

I would maybe be slightly skeptical of this story right now. Looks like almost all the info in the article is from the cops, if I'm reading it right. It's a bit too perfect of a kids-these-days moral panic story. I'm gonna wait for more info before I draw conclusions.

when was the last time a child hung out at a mall

Okay I think I was assuming you meant "fluent" = perfectly correct speech/comprehension/writing. But if we both agree perfect doesn't exist, I'm not really sure what you mean by fluent.

Idk it's like saying "we have to admit that no one will ever be perfect at painting." I mean sure I guess but what would that even mean?
comment in response to post
Yeah but I feel like you're saying there is such a thing as perfect and perfect = sounding like a native speaker. Part of my point is that native speakers sound like all kinds of stuff, and also the way a native speaker sounds isn't even necessarily better or more correct than a non-native one

And (b) discourages people from trying to learn a language. Yes, you probably will not sound like a native speaker, but that's fine! You can still communicate and make friends and literally become a movie star in your second language
comment in response to post
I just think this attitude of "no one will ever be perfect at a second language" is harmful because it (a) promotes the idea that there is One Perfect Form of every language, which marginalizes all the beautiful dialects and accents within the wide world of a big language like english
comment in response to post
yeah learning languages as an adult is hard! But every language is a rich tapestry that's constantly being woven by all its speakers, both native and nonnative, you know?
comment in response to post
like if an English language learner says "I was in hospital" in the US that sounds weird but it's normal in Australia so who gets to say if they're fluent or not?
comment in response to post
Do you mean become truly fluent as an adult? Because some people learn multiple languages as children and so have native fluency in both. I'm also interested in how we define perfect fluency. Every language has so many accents and dialects and variations.
